I got my Spindle and bearing hub setup for my tire carrier. It looks like i have a project to do this weekend.

But i got to looking at the spindle. I have a 6 inch "C" channel for a bumper.

Challenge is the spindle is 4 inches.
So the spindle will not reach all the way to the bottom of the bumper.

What i was going to do is notch out the top of the bumper so the spindle comes out the top like every other carrier setup.

Since it is a C channel bumper i can weld the spindle lengthwise to the inside the bumper. Also i was thinknig bout drilling 2 holes to add plug welds also.

Since the spindle is shorter than the bumper the bottom of the spindle will not weld to the bottom of the bumper. so i want to use a piece of quarter inch thick angle iron and weld the bottom of the spindle to it then weld the angle iron to the bumper.

After that i also plan on boxing in the rear of the bumper here and plug welding the plate to the backside of the spindle.

Doing this the spindle will be welded on both sides and all the around on top.

So now... my question is, is this strong enough? I am not sure about the angle on the bottom. Thinking about it it looks like it will be fine, but of coruse i second guess it because i really want it to be strong since the swing out portion will be holding a tire plus cooler rack and 2 storage containers. And since the tire is going to be offset more to the spindle it wont have that much weight as leverage on the spindle.

Any comments or ideas to help with this?

    Thanks!!

    I got my setup here

    http://www.troutindustries.com/

At first i just ordered the outer sleeve for the spindle but he was back ordered but had a complete kit with the sleeve, spindle and bearings and bushings. so i ordered that. it was about $50. It might be a little more than what you get at northern for the spindles but when i got the spindle setup i was pleasently surprised to see he used a hard plastic bushing for the bottom and a bearing on top and the best part it wasnt a small chinsey spindle he used a bery large necked spindle so it is very stout. There has been problems with people snapping off the tire carrier at the spindle when using a 1 inch spindle, this will be tough to bust.

Dan, I'm getting ready to do the same thing. I bought a 1,000 lb rated spindle, bearings, seal, nut and washer, cap, and hub at a local trailer supply house (Six Robblees) for about $35. It's a 1 1/4" spindle. I found the spindle is too short for me also so what I'm doing is taking some thick wall tube that the spindle just fits in, drilling holes in it for plug welds, sliding the spindle down in the tube, then welding the spindle at the top of the tube and plug welding down the sides. This helps keep the rigidity of the tube and lets me adjust the length and height anywhere I need it. I'd still gusset the heck out of it though. I plan on doing that inside the bumper before I weld the end caps on. Nickmil

Thanks for the tips and help everyone. Kind of bummed now. not that i am having problems with the spindle mount but rather i have been doing measurements and i just cant get the tire to go offset. So it looks like i will have the tire centered and make a cooler rack for the top. I dont want to do that because i would like to see out of the jeep but i guess it is time for some side mirrors. Guess there is compromises everywhere.
