I am picking up a 78 CJ7 in the morning and need to flat tow it about 300 miles home. Rolling hills and some steep grades. My tow vehicle is an Excursion and the CJ is equipped with a tow bar that the PO's PO used to tow it behind a motor home. What do I need to flat tow it. I have the correct ball size and the Jeep is wired for lights. It is an automatic tranny. Do I just put the tranny in N and the transfer case in N? If I have to drop driveshafts, how do I do that and what tools do I need? This was unexpected pickup so I did not have time to prep. I would do a search as I am sure much has been said, but my only internet is on the cell phone here and I can not search. Thanks.

Also, what do I do about steering wheel? Keep it locked with wheels straight, unlocked but tied up or just leave it loose?

Should I stop from time to time to check it out and if so, what should I be looking for?

Oh, this is a QUADRATRAC! Aka Borg-Warner 1339. Jeep has special instructions for towing the BW1339 in the owner's manual.

IIRC if you have the low range (BW1339) you can put the low range unit in neutral and flat tow. Otherwise, with the BW1320 (??) with no low range, you must remove both driveshafts. http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=56795&highlight=tow+quadratrac http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=4987&highlight=tow+quadratrac

There will be a shift paddle on the floor for the low range. Low range for these is an optional planetary transmission that bolts to the back of the transfer case, similar to the Warn overdrive. Most came with low range.

I would say since it is that far and you really dont want to damage anything. Pullthe drievshafts to be safe. it is cheap insruance. And if there are no locking hubs, i would pull the flanges to let the axle spin free in the housing
