The Jeepster is a stock 67 with the 225 and automatic. I replaced the dist. It is a Delco style standard ignition. I added new points, rotor, and condenser and now it will not start. I did notice the PO had the other ignition in there funny; I actually had a really hard time getting it out. The PO had the spark plug wires incorrect according to the book, so I put the wires and dist. in the way the book shows. I guess my questions would be. If I line the timing mark up to zero where should the rotor be pointing? Also is it possible to have the dist. in wrong even though I followed the book? Could it be 180 out? Could there be another issue?

The rotor should point to plug terminal #1 on the cap when the timing mark is at 0*.

After that it's easy. Be sure the distributor is fully seated. If not it won't mesh with the drive gear on the camshaft.

Hey Mark, just reading Chris's response over at the AJC and that would of course be the best way to do it, verify that everything is where it's supposed to be. Sounds like the PO maybe had it one tooth out and compensated by turning the dist and/or moving the plug wires.

I would start over from ground 0. pull #1 plug turn motor over by hand with finger pluging spark plug hole when you feel compression keep rotating engine in correct rotation untill timming marks line up. ck roter should be pointing to #1 spot on cap that should be close enough to get it started by cranking and adj timming. oh one more thing I have made a mistake on is putting wires on in wrong direction. so crank and watch rotor for the right direcdtion. I would do this because I have been their and it sound basic but I have found I skiped some thing or just got the dis. off one tooth.

Yes, it could be 180 out. Remember that the crank turns twice for every revolution of the distributor - it's important that the #1 cylinder be at TDC of the compression stroke when you line up the distributor. That's why Jeepen suggested that you put your thumb over the #1 spark plug hole and feel for the air being pushed out on the compression stroke.

OK. Thanks for the info. I did all of that, but still no spark. I also changed the coil. Is there something electrical that could be causing this? What about the balist resister?

    Trace back.

12V to the coil with the key in the start position?

    Is the coil good?

Points and condensor in good condition?

    Point dwell properly set?

    Thanks for the info.
The points I was using were new - well from who knows how many years ago. I have boxes of parts and I had used a set of new points from one of them, but that was actually the problem. I went to the parts store and got a new set and she fired right up. I am still not sure about having the dist in exactly right - plus the carb is pretty bad too. Oh well this is what owning commandos (6 of them) is all about. I have somebody wanting to buy this one - so I need to get it tweeked pretty good.
