I heard a bit of a noise driving yesterday but couldn't figure out what it was till I glanced under the rear end of my jeep this morning. My the cap on the end of my e-brake cable had popped loose and the tip was dragging. Now, from what I've seen on krage my '71 should have a t-case mounted e-brake. I've got cables running to my rear drums and nothing on the t-case.

The previous owner mentioned that this had been switched to 11" brakes and I assume they came from a later CJ. So looking through Krage, there's cables for 11" brakes. Would those be what I'm looking for or is there something else I need to consider?

The other side didn't even have a cable so the e-brake never worked really. I'm just going to order the two cables once I figure out what to get and finally have a working e-brake.

Somebody must know. The cable is this pretty thick thing that runs from an equalizer to the drum itself.

When I get the replacement cables once I know which ones I need is there anything I need to know? Probably going to replace my pads while the brakes are opened anyways, I'm starting to hear more squeaking.

a picture might help showing the style of e-brake set-up
what type of handle set-up ?
what you are describing was commonly used, cables to the rear wheels
how/where the equalizer is set-up will determine proper cable length
the cable attachment ends should be the same regardless

I'll crawl under and take some pictures. The cables and their sheathing is pretty thick, off the top of my head I'd say a half inch. They were connected by running up from the drum to a a spot on a cross member that who holes punched in it. This held the sheath from moving and the cable stuck out the the equilizer, which actually needs new springs now that I think about it. It looked like a relatively stock set up but everybody here is always talking about t-case mounted brakes. Did the '71 have drums from factory or did the PO just do a good job?

Oh, there's no handle for the E brake, it's a pedal on the far left side of the foot well. The release handle for the E-brake is mounted in the dash.

your description sounds more like a 1972 set-up with the release cable thru the dash
it could have had a cable at the rear from the factory, but the handle would still be under the dash and the cable to the rear wheels would be a long, 1 piece type cable. The fulcrum or equalizer point would be at the transfer case.
I'm fuzzy on this, not actually owning one.
maybe another member can jump in here and verify my statements
