I am working on a 42 GPW for one of my customers,I did a frame up on this Jeep about a year ago so every thing is new.The problem is that the jeep will not start after you have gotten it up to running temp. The jeep starts great when it is cold,it also starts great when it is hot.The problem is that it will not start back after it has gotten to running temp and then let to cool down for about 10 minutes or so.I am getting good spark and fuel when it does this you can pull it and it will start as soon as the tires move. This Jeep has fought me tooth and nail the whole way,I have come to the conclusion that it just does not want to be driven! If anyone has any suggestions it would be very helpful:smash:this is about what i'm ready to do if I don't get this thing out of my shop!

I thought about that but it has been running fine until now and the fuel system is all new and is all in its original location away from all heat sources.

Poor tired old WWII vet just wants to rest, is all.

Bad coil maybe? Or condenser? Or coil to dist. cap wire? Sounds to me like something electrical might be cracked, and when it gets warm enough for the part to expand and open up the crack, it's beaking connection. I've seen some wierd electrical problems, esp. with carbon-cored spark plug wires. Might try replacing the wire from the coil to the center post of the dist. cap with a temp. replacement, maybe an old plug wire, and see if the situation changes.

Ran my pickup for years with an old Harley spark plug wire on the coil, after the original one cracked and arced away about 1/2 inch of the wire. This was inside the insulation, where I couldn't see it.

So, after the 10 minute cool down, the starter will turn but it won't start? And you can easily bump start it with the key at run but no starter motor? Sounds like the starter is disconnecting the ignition when it's hot. I'm not that familiar with the GPW circuits, but on some normal cars, the starter switch will bypass the ballast resistor to run the ignition on a full 12V when starting. If it were a normal car, I'd point to the ignition switch. Seems funny that iyt would be connected to engine temp, except maybe becasue the starter switch is on the floor and gets hot.

Did you replace the coil? And you have the foot starter, and not one on the dash, right?:?

It has the factory floor starter button,I have tried another coil I had at the shop that is supposed to be good.I have also replaced the points and condensor. The starter might be the problem because my MB will not start if the starter does not spin the engine fast enough,It is still 6 volt.

sounds like the starter is not in top notch shape, even if rebuilt, may not be spinning it fast enough when hot,or reqireing more amp draw than normal thus something else is starving for the correct voltage, could also be a bad condenser, heat will screw with a condenser, but normall will affect how it runs as well when hot
