Fan question

    I'm in the process of doing some major work on my 1973 CJ5 with a 304 AMC
    engine. I was fortunate enough to grab some parts off of a 1980 jeep wagoneer that had a 360. It helped me add a York for OBA, and power steering to the jeep. My jeep originally came with a flex fan, and I got what I think is a thermostatically controlled inertia type fan off the Wagoneer. Since I plan to use the jeep mostly to idle around in the woods with brief periods of hill climbing, I was wondering what fan would be better. Thanks

    I would think your flex fan would be fine as long as you are using a shroud. I am not familiar with the Waggy fan you speak of. It sounds like it might be electric?

    EDIT: I just realized you are speaking of a fan clutch on the Waggy. Check it for oil leaks if you plan to use it. You can use the Waggy fan as long as it will fit inside the CJ shroud. The fan clutch is designed to disengage at higher RPMs to conserve HP/fuel since ram air typically becomes the main source for air through the radiator.

    The flex fan is made to flex at high rpm and acomplish pretty much what the clutch fan does plus it wieghs less and is not as hard on the water pump bearing.

    Just make sure whatever fan you use its not closer than say an inch from rad. or it will bite it.

    keep in mind also its a real pain to bolt in if the rad.s still in.

    Thanks guys, for your info. I had it backward, I thought the clutch fan kicked in when the engine temp increased. I'll probably stay with the flex fan for now, considering that I won't use the jeep on the highway very much.

    if it's operating properly, it will.
    high temps it will engage the fan

    I looked at the repair manual a little and it indicates the clutch fan is used with heavy duty cooling systems, so I'm thinking that would be better?

    I have a hotrod buddy that has gone round and round with cooling issues for his small block. After it was all said and done he ended up with a 4 row radiator and a fan clutch with shroud.
    It's pretty hot around here in the summer so maybe the fanclutch is the way to go. I never trusted them b/c you usually don't know it wore out 'til something overheats but I'm considering an OEM unit if I have enough room behind my 4 row radiator.
