I have a milemarker 8000lb winch that I am mounting to the front of my 64.
I don't like to buy premanufactured "stuff" if I don't have to. So I decided to build my own mounting plate and modify my bumper.

The first problem I encountered was that the guy I usually buy steel from doesn't have a metal brake big enough. The next shop I called wanted 75.00 for a 29" x 12" x .25" peice of steel with 2 bends. So I called the first shop back and we talked. He had some 3/16 plate on hand, 1/4 flat bar and 3/16 angle. I ended up with:

    3/16 x 29 x 9 -1
    1/4 x 2 x 9 -2
    3/16 x 1.5 x 1.5 x 29 angle -2

The angle will run legthwise to keep the plate from bending, the 1/4 will run on the undrside where the winch mounts to the plate to help reinforce. I know every one recomends 1/4 for the mounting plate, but I have a pretty good feeling about this one

I will post pictures as soon as I figure out how to get more space or something.

I think what you are doing will work just fine. I made my plate out of 1/2" bar stock. Here's a couple pics.
