I seem to need new alternators (rebuilt stock Delco ) every few years in my 258 '75 CJ,,This lastest one (almost 2 years old) started to give a whirring sound for the past few months, then the battery went dead over night,, I'm assuming it's just like the others, a bad diode. I do have a Meyers Electro-touch snow plow, and I realize that it takes a lot of power to operate, and I probably should have a higher than stock output,,, Other than the plow, there aren't any big power draw things in the CJ.. Has any one rebuilt their own alternator and boosted up the output? I'm thinking that I start to kill these alternators during the winter when I'm plowing.

HEAT IS THE KILLER OF DIODES High amp surge draws are not liked by alternators. Thats why diodes in welders are about two inches across and inch thick. Don't know about your snow plow? 12vdc up-dn? Consider second battery with dual isolator used during winter only. should solve problem.

I believe the rating of the alternator is determined by the number of turns of wire in the stator and field (and their resulting sizes); not something you can upgrade by changing the diodes or whatever.

Tim is correct about the windings. If you have an old-time alternator/generator/starter shop in your town they will be able to rebuild yours, possibly with windings that will up the capacity. The second battery and an isolator is preferred for loads like winches, plows and the like.

Interesting, but *Do*Not* use his "Wire Capacity Chart", he's way off base on his theories & sizes. Use a piece of #4 welding cable to go from the alt to the battery.
