On how to remove the harmonic balancer so I can get to the timing cover.
(Sort of buying or renting an 'official' puller)
    Thanks!

OK, looks like I'll be over to pick up the puller. (It pays to have JEEP friends in town!)

yeap, those things are on so tight, you don't even need that bolt in the center to hold it on.

NOt true. I found out the hard way!

I rebuilt the engine in a school bus conversion (350 chebby) a few years ago. ran it for 500-750 miles around town here, then packed up and moved to NV (the first tiem) Got that sucker all the way into North CA, rolling along about 60 and I hear this clank/Boom/thud. Looked at the guages and it seems to have quit charging....HHmm, pulled over and looked and the harmonic balancer was nowhere to be found. Looked for 3 hours trying to find it. never did. Figured out that I forgot to install the center bolt and it took that long to work its way off, but it did, in a real bad place. limped it 100 miles (dual batteries and a BIG radiator are nice) and finally found a J/Y that dug one up for me. Got it rolling again and learned a little lesson!

Thats a funny story. Well, not funny at the time I'm sure.

I snapped the bolt off in my crankshaft not to long ago. Spent about a week freaking out. An engine builder told me those things are on so tight, you barley need that bolt. He said geez, stop freaking out. just give it a couple tack welds. Then I realized it does take a nasty puller to get off and took a sledge for me to get it back on. its on there good. I ended up drilling it and tapping it for a different sized bolt. Of course that was after snapping a couple drills and drilling them out too.

Locally NAPA and Checker have a few common tools to loan, what Checker does is you pay full price for the tool and they give a full refund when you bring it back, doesn't matter if you keep it 2 hours or 2 months.

Went and got the puller from packrat2A. I spent more time shootin' the bull than I took pulling the balancer.
    Thanks Mike!
