Well, I've gotten the new (old) 360 torn down and I'm doing a full inspection. Its a 1974 (built August 28th) 4V (factory 4 barrel). It was pretty dirty... yeah, like really dirty! Pulled the valve covers and found the gasket was slipped, could explain the gasket leak. Some carbon deposits, but I've seen worse. Timing chain only had 3/8" deflection, but will replace with a Summit double roller. Found a broken rocker arm, but no damage to lifter or valve train. Found one flat lobe on camshaft, so will probably pull my 'mild performance' cam out of the 304. Figure I'll just put in new rockers, lifters and pushrods. Crank looks fantastic, no scoring or roughness on main bearings or rod bearings, in fact just minor wear patterns on any bearing surfaces, however there is some more excessive wearing on cam bearings, so new bearings will be going in. Cylinder walls look great, think I had better micro them and verify if they're standard bore, but pistons and rings look great too.

More pictures will be added as I go along.

Let me know if you need any parts. I have the same engine taken apart and I don't think it will ever go back together.

Thanks, dvader! I'll certainly let you know. (Don't have a manual flywheel sitting around by chance?R))
Got the motor for a great price ($50), so I don't feel too bad spending a little extra on some 'goodies'.
Anybody got a preferance between Sealed Power or Felpro gaskets? Basically same price, and same things included...

I do have a manual flywheel with a good condition clutch disc and preasure plate. The guy I got it from had it in a 1975 J20. Fly wheel has some surface rust, but the engagement surface is clean. $90 plus actual shipping for the set.

Thanks, man... but I do have a good clutch disc and pressure plate already. PO put in a (he claims,I'll know for sure when I pull it) new clutch/pressure plate set-up, so all I really need is the flywheel. I can get a new one to the door for $120.

The question would be, do I need a new pressure plate and clutch disc? Don't the 304 and 360 flywheel assemblies have the same dimensions?

No Problem. Those $120 flywheels are a good deal. Even if I let my one go for $50, you are still probable further with a new one. Like I said before, please let me know if there is anything you need.

If the parts seem to be in good condition, I would consider reusing the cover, but not the disk. You can kinda get an idea of how long the your parts have been in service by the condition of the friction material, and any heat checking on the surface of the cover.

I also recall that there's a 10.5" and an 11" diameter, and that both will fit. The OEM 304 parts are 10.5" IIRC. Up to you whether you want to keep those or upgrade.

Yeah, I think my CJ5 304 has a 10.5 inch clutch and the 360 out of the J20 has an 11 inch clutch.
If you are thinking upgrade, you may want to consider a Centerforce disc and plate. The Centerforce requires less force on the peddle.

:) Thanks guys, I've been so focused on the 360, I haven't pulled the 304 yet to see what it looks like between the motor and tranny, so I'll get that done ASAP and see what I've got.

Question on rocker arms, based on research, it looks like the AMC 360, and the Chebby 350 Gen 1 motors use the same 3/8" stud mount, 1.6 ratio rockers. Rather than try and find AMC specific rockers, can I look for Chebby 1.6, 3/8" stud rockers? (Think less $$$) Will there be any fitment issues, or need hardened pushrods, etc. that I would be getting into? I have found these from Summit: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=CCA-1416-16&autoview=sku
but have found similar on da 'Bay for considerably less.
    TIA

AFAIK the only parts from another engine that works in an AMC V8 is lifters from a Mopar SB V8. Just offhand, I would say no, but maybe I've missed it.

You could search/ask at Bulltear - they are probably the best Jeep forum for the 360.

Thanks Tim, I will check Bulltear & IFSJ, too.
The reason I thot they might work is from the Summit application page:
