I should be getting my new gears today. i am familiar with how to set them up as i have done so in the past. Question is where can i get a decent dial indicator for the job? b/c i cant find the one i had before but i dont want to break the bank either. i know snap on has them but almost $600 is way to much for me.

The cheapies from Harbor freight are fine. We use several of them at work in crappy situations (hydraulic oil, grease and water) where we don't want to ruin a good one. they seem to hold up fine and would probably last a hobbiest a lifetime.

You can also order from Enco http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRHM?KNC-DV6174368836 and check out page 234-235 of there online catalog, these are decent made taiwanese units. I order quite a bit from Enco for my homeshop, they are owned by MSC and carry much of the same things, even shipped from the same warehouse but they cater to hobbiest and the prices for the same item betwwen MSC and Enco reflect it.

Harbor Freight has them for cheap.
But I don't know if I trust the 1" dial indicators.
They also have a precission dial test indicator, but I can't find it on their website.
At the very least, you can get magnetic bases there.

Check Jegs. They have the Proform pinion depth checker that comes with a dial indicator for $100 and you can really do it right. Buy a mag base and you are good to go.
