Just recently got a '64 CJ with original D18, and T90 trans. I have a line on a T18 transmission from a '73, will it fit? From what I can tell, the bellhousing and shafts may be different.
    thanks

checked the tech library here may have missed something, another place to look is in 4wd catalog with vintage parts gives some dimensions on transmissions there plus some other little tidbit stuff. not really sure for the full answer though

No, the '73 tranny will be from an AMC application..You'll need a different input shaft and bell housing arangment...

With the T-98 adapter ring along with a T-18 adapter for the Dana 18 anything is possible.

FWIW if you are going to the trouble of swapping in a T18, I'd find the Ford T18 version and use it. It has a much lower 1st gear and isn't really much more work to do. Novak Conversions has a lot of info on this. There's probably a lot here in our Tech Section as well. I see you have the 4 banger, so a T98 might be a better/easier conversion. They are getting pretty scarce though.

Thanks for the responses, looks like some mods may be necessary. The Overdrive guy can supply either a T18 (low 1st) or a T98, but the cost is near $1k and the T18 bellhousing adapter to 4cyl is still an issue. Kinda confirms what I am hearing. I may stick w/ the 3 sp for now as all this jeep needs is a minor rebuild. I'm going to start stock and work from there.

Jon - Do you have a 'target' for what you are eventually going to do with the jeep?

I think where Chuck is going with this question is....
If your Jeep is going to be mostly for street/mild wheelin (dirt roads or established and relatively smooth trails) then the T18 swap might not be worthwhile for your application.

If you intend to do more serious offroading, climbing over fallen logs, steep climbs, rocky trails/stream crossings, or hills of marbles ;) then you might want to give more thought to how to make the T18 work.
I had a T18 from a full-size Cherokee behind the V6. The T18 had to have the input shaft swapped, I needed a different bell, installed a centerforce clutch, needed different driveshafts... it was expensive as at the time I didn't do my own driveline work.
For the places I took that rig after the swap... it was worth every dime

    Good luck!!

Good point. This Jeep will probably not see the hill o' marbles, (what gearing is needed for THAT?), basically not bushwacking, but existing trails, and some on road use. Perhaps the gearing issue is not as big a deal as getting the brakes sorted out with 11".

    Go with:
    1. Stop
    2. Steer
    3. GO
    4. Lookin good ;)

You will be surprised at how well it will do stock (for gearing).

If your just looking for a put around rig, the stock running gear will work great.
As for gearing, If you don't have OD, 4.27s work nice but wouldn't go much more than a 31" tire. With OD 5.38 is the only way to go.

I had a stock '63 that I drove up to the snow (no very fast on the highway). The funny thing was in the deep snow the stock Jeep went better than my dad's V-8, 4sp, 33" tire, locked ft & rr 5.

I also know of a $2 Flatfender that has been running the mountain in more or less stock form for years. The $2 came from $1 for a raffle that won the Jeep and $1 for a raffle that won the winch. Over the years as he got older, PS was added and OBA but with a flat head, 5.38 and 32" tires he was able to go just about anywhere. Yes the little engine would run out of power on long hills with more than 1 (maybe 2) people but not very often. This old timer also help make and continued to run some of the nasties trails in WA st until his death, his widow and grand/great grand kids still use the Jeep today on the same trails.

Guess what I'm typing is the Jeep is very capable in stock form, wouldn't worry about changing the trans unless your going to get into more than just light trail use. The best money would be to find a Power-Lok for the ft & rr of the Jeep, this will help more than a low first gear.

My two cents, some may or may not agree.
