I am going to have to cut in my rear tank filler hole and the question is where does everyone put theirs? I got the rear pre-bent hoses coming but I keep looking at the side as a better option. The guy at Krages said mud & water would be a problem on the side. Also if you have Pics so I could see spacing with lights on the rear or placement on the side that would be helpful. Thanks

This is the factory setup for a 71 model.

I don't think you'll be able to find the stock filler neck parts for '71-75, but the '76-on is similar. The inlet is a little different - recessed into a plate that goes in the body.

That's what I'd use, and I'd use the stock location.

I put mine on the side and wished I hadn't. It's a PITA to have one filler on the right and one on the left. Of course, if you are going to eliminate the under-seat tank that wouldn't matter as much. I prefer to have them both. 4 Wheel Parts Hardware has a lot of gas tank lines, hoses and fillers if you need to look at some.

Tim's right about the pre-'76 stuff. Hard to find. I used the '76-'83 style w/ the 1.25" filler hose. I mounted mine on the side because of the mud. The filler I got came off a postal jeep and it took me a half hour of poking and scraping the mud out to get to the hose clamps.:v6:

    :?

What - after 25 years of side fuel fillers on CJ's *now* it's an issue? R)

I went on the side, mostly for aesthetic reasons - I think it looks crowded between the tail and backup lights.

I had it there on my CJ5 for at least 10 years with no mud or water issues...that's what a good gas cap is for.

I bought special fuel-rated hose locally to hook it up.

Have you looked at a TJ fill? Not sure of the hose sizes, but it's round and would look better and might be easier to mount.

Thanks guys I think I'm going with Mike and Rockys placement. I agree with Mike it looks crowded when they are all in the back. Thanks for all the opinions and photos so quickly that's what makes this board so great. We can see how others solved problems then decide for ourselves without putting things on. Thanks again

Thanks from me too guys, I also have a '71 and don't like the way the rear filler looks. One question though, I'm going to put in a new tank, which one should I order that will fit the frame and let me convert to side fill :? Thanks in advance:)

The 71-75 tank is completely different than the later tanks. They bolt in where as the later tanks are strapped in. You should be able to find a flex hose that will fit the stock tank if you want it on the side. Just remember theres a baffle on the inside of the fender that will more than likely need cut to fit a side fill.

I had a custom tank made from 1/8" steel for not much more than a 70's era stock tank was going to cost.

I am moving the rear fill the PO put in to a side fill - my reason is it's too difficult to fill with a gas can with the lights and such on the back.
