I have access to a set of 78/79 J10 Dana 44 axles with disc on the front. Would I be able to swap the front disc brake calipers and rotors to my 73 CJ5 without too much trouble?

I don't see D44 spindles bolting to D30 knuckles, along with 6 lug rotors.
    maybe I'm all wet too...

Why not use the caliper bracket from the 44 and bolt it on to the 30 and going from there. Popular thing to do on early broncos. Use GM calipers, thick rotors and new bearings.

That's going to give you 6 lug, you can't use the spindle, outer axle, bearing hub and rotor, or lockout hub if you want/need to stay 5 lug. You can use the caliper bracket and caliper, use a thick '78-'79 CJ 1 1/8" rotor, either machine the back of your bearing hub for the rotor or get a CJ disc brake bearing hub, use your axle and locking hub. You will need to space the inner bearing out if you use your drum brake spindles or use disc brake spindles and bearings with no spacing. Do a search, this has been covered tons of times and I think there is a writeup on it. Nickmil

Why not just use the wider J 10 axles all together??? More stability on the road and stronger Dana 44 front.

that is, unless you have local laws preventing it.
