I have a 75cj5 that has a Meyers Cab hard top, No Roll Bar etc.. I am not sure I will want to be taking the top off with out a roll bar. So I am thinking I will want to install an A/C unit in it. Is this difficult to do? Is it best to buy one new or find one in a junk yard? Any info?

There's no junkyard source for an AC unit AFAIK. Pretty sure there was a factory kit for dealer installed AC, but I've seen few to none of them.

If your Jeep is a V8, you can probably take the compressor, pulleys and brackets from a (Grand) Wagoneer. Almost all of those have the 360 and AC. If you are handy, you might be able to adapt the rest of the Wagoneer system, but I think it'd probably be easier to adapt the console from an aftermarket unit meant to hang under the dash.

Factory AC pulleys and compressor brackets for the 258 are pure unobtainium, AFAIK. You might be able to take the brackets, pulleys, water pump... everything off the front of an XJ or TJ 4.0L and use it. If you did it, it would be worth writing up as an article.

IIRC there are AC kits available for hot rods that might work in a Jeep. You'd have to adapt the kit to your engine though.

BTW - no way would I drive a CJ with a hardtop without a rollbar, any more than one without a top. My experience is that the top will simply fold up and fall off on rollover. Zero collision protection from a steel cab, maybe even a hazard due to pieces of the cab coming into the occupant's space.

    Yeah,
I would be more likely to have a roll cage built than put A/C in. What's the point of having an open top Jeep without taking the top off??? Even when it's hot out, with a bikini top on (the Jeep) it's not too badR)R)

I have got to agree with Tim. My steel hardtop would probably be worse in an accident then nothing without a rollbar.

my theory is jeeps shouldn't have tops or doors, they are just temporary for the winter. i'd definitly think it be more expensive to put an ac unit in then buying a used rollbar.

Since we kinda touched on roll bars...I thought this was funny...I approached a guy at the gas station last summer who had a MINT CJ3B...looked like he had just bought it. I talked to him for a few minutes...and I said "no roll bar huh?...I don't think I could handle that."...He looked at me like I was Dracula and said in a snide voice.."I'm not gonna roll".
Since then...I was thinking about trying out that logic on the next cop that pulls me over for not wearing seat belt..."it's okay officer....I'm not gonna crash".
