    Hey guys...

I'm having trouble establishing a good idea of what is under the hood of my cj5. It looks to me like it is a buick 231,but I'm not 100%. Today I simply wanted to change the oil and remove the cruddy original filter. But of course as all things jeep related it became a nightmare and cursing was involved. The code stamped into the block is 1261438 which when googled comes up as a 77-78 buick 231. But the filter I was given is a larger inlet size and overall diameter than what I removed. At this point I'm stuck and could use some guidance. I'm starting to believe this isn't a 231 after all, but maybe a 225?

    Thanks again!

it could be a 231 with a 225 oil pump on it, or possibly a 231 with a 225 timing cover on it.

That would make sense since the parts from the 225 to 231 are interchangeable. But does anyone know the diameter of the oil filter holes in comparison. The stock 77 231 oil filter was easily larger then the oil filter that came on the cj. I just really don't know what to look for.:(

If you have the filter you took off - cross ref it to see what it fits.

The 225 Filter is larger than the 231 - Stock anyway.

The filter I have currently has ZERO numerical information of any sort on it...just my luck huh.

Here are some images that may help, let me know if I can take more pictures to help guide you guys.

That looks like a 225 filter. Take it to the parts store and get one for a 67 CJ with the 225 and compare it.
Worst case - go to NAPA and they can look it up by size, thread, etc. Once you have it to cross ref with - your good.

BTW - you might want to get a book to keep these notes in :)

Trust me I already have one. When I was 13 I was handed a 69' Jeepster commando with a 225. I basically was taught how to drive standard on it and it became a learning experience on how to do many things automotive related. Well 8 years later and I still have that same book of notes. The commando is gone, but the memories of it will live on in my cj5. Thanks for the help fellas, especially you Warloch. I will let you know how this turns out in the morning.

Got the correct filter at napa. The guy behind the counter effortlessly reached below the counter and grabbed it for me without knowing more about the engine than "its a 77/78 buick 231". Thanks again everyone.:v6:
