Ok... so I am out in the garage doing a D18 rebuild....

Putting on the new brake pads and they seem to be rubbing. i took them out and torqued down the ebrake without the shoes in and it turns free.... Once I put the pads back in and torque it down, it rubs.

So I took the pads out... did a little grinding and still rubbing, but I can't tell where. i remember reading here that some other users have had the same issue. But can't find it with the search function.

    What to grind? Any ideas?

what is worse... is it does not rub evenly... it turns ok... then rubs... turns ok again and then rubs when the brake drum gets to the same place in the rotation. almost like somthen is bent.

but it only does it with the shoes in... and it is a brand new output shaft.

I wouldn't worry about it, eventually it will wear in. Keep in mind, the "parking" brake was designed to do just that, park.

even if it gets so hard I can't turn it by hand?

I sounds like metal on metal.

I put blue painters tape on the contact surface and then reinstalled... hoping that the rubbing points would leave visble marks on the tape. but no marks, so I am not sure that it is the contact surface of the new shoes that is rubbing.

    Thanks for the reply.

Yep, that would explain it

I was going to suggest that your local shop could arc the shoes to the drum, but maybe it's not needed (esp. now that the noise problem has been identified).
