    First, I am aware of the sticky regarding VIN Info and how to figure it out... but:
    My wife and I have gone through and figured out the first seven numbers 8405017 but we are still completely puzzled about the last 5 numbers 50384
    This vehicle is registered as a 1970 CJ6. Just can't seem to figure out what these last 5 numbers pertain to. Here's a picture of the s/n plate:

    Thanks in advance for helping me in my ignorance:oops::?

    believe so, but if I read that right, does that mean that my cj6 is within the last 250 ever made?

    and what about a "12" digit vin???? sorry, can you see why I have some confusion??

    This is how it should break down according to the pdf that Sparky gave you. Sparky, correct me if I'm wrong.

    8405017 50384

    84 --> universal CJ-6

    05 --> open body

    0 --> Universal ("ignore this"... i.e. don't count it so you actually have an 11 digit number. Odd I know but it's a Jeep and we love its quirks ;))

    1 --> Left hand drive

    7 --> 225 V6 with emissions control

    50384 --> the sequential serial #

    CJ6 were made into the AMC era, '74 or '75 IIRC. So, in short, "no."

    ok, so understanding that it's a sequential serial #, ie: last 5 digits, what exactly is it sequential to? does it tell me anything about my jeep?
    sorry if I'm missing the point

    It's just a sequential serial number like we said. It's number is one more than the one made before and one less than the one made after it.

    First, thank you for responses, although vague , I went back into research mode.

    The question that I was asking.... (understanding Seq. S/N) was where does my jeep "fall" in the sequence.

    The answer I found on another site was better explained.

    It stated that between years 1962 and 1971 ALL CJ'S were given a serial number in sequence of manufacture, regardless of model/body type, etc.
    And my jeep was # 50384 manufactured between 1962 and 1971.

    This site has been very helpful with me understanding decoding the first part of the S/N... but the wording of the 8-13th numbers being sequential is a bit vague for someone searching for a narrowed down answer. Because it's sequential between 62 and 71, not just 71 and prior.

    there were definitely more than 50, 384 jeeps manufactured BEFORE 1971... so the cut off being 1962 to 1971 is rather critical information to know. This is when this format of reading serial numbers began.

    Thanks again for all your help.

    here is where I found my info that gave me a more informed answer

    Oh, I thought Zoomer covered that in the document.

    One tends to forget and assume a certain level of knowledge about these things for better or worse. Good questions that are well worded are just as helpful to us as good answers that are well worded are to you. :beer:

    Actually, covering the other models (besides CJ-5) is one area the VIN document is lacking. I've been meaning to try work that in as Randy has some more data from the lost years, but I haven't dedicated the time. Each model has it's own sequence of sequential serial numbers, but the VIN document only covers the CJ-5 in much detail. We've got pretty good data from another site for the 1960-1967 model years, but unfortunately we haven't been able to find any good documentation for the '68-'71 model years, that's one of the reason the VIN project was started. If we had better data, we could determine the month of manufacture for your CJ-6, but that's about it. There are a lot fewer CJ-6's around, and it will be difficult to accumulate enough serial numbers with associated build dates to provide a good estimate of month of manufacture.

    The CJ-6 serial numbers are interesting as we have 38337 registered as a 1970 model, and then the next number we have is 51380 registered as a 1971 model. It almost appears as though there was a change in the CJ-6 serial number sequence somewhere around the late 1970 - 1971 model years. Maybe it was when AMC took over???

    Sorry I'm not much more help on this.
