If I were to put a tow bar on the front of my CJ, how far could it safely be towed?

Unlock the hubs, pull the rear driveshaft and tow away.

    Don't forget the lights:)

What if I don't drop the driveshaft? I was thinking about towing to the off-road park (about 70 miles) and I don't really have the $$ for a trailer.

Take the time and drop the driveshaft. If I recall correctly there is only like 4 bolts holding the straps in place. If you don't pull the shaft I think it can over heat the bearings in the t case. I would rather be safe than at the off road park with a broke t case....

This is a controversial topic, that'been gone over and over and over again here. If you search for "flat towing" you'll find plenty of opinions.

The most conservative action is to remove the driveshaft, though I towed my Jeep many hundreds of miles with the TC in neutral.

I always thought the trans in neutral, the T Case in high, and front hubs unlocked. As long as its the D18, since the gears are always spinning regardless in conventional drive, it would be safe to go about, since that's how the D18 was deigned to operate.

Nope sammy, Tranny in gear. Your D18 will do fine either way, but you can waste your tranny leaving it in neutral.
