Finally finished upgrading to 11' brakes in the front and got the brake lights to work. Went about a mile down the road and developed a bad bearing type of noise in the trans area. It goes away when the jeep is slowed to about 5 mph. If I depress the cluch or shift into neutral, I still get the noise (until I've slowed to under 5mph). Any thoughts that can help me diagnoise what's going on?

Seems if it were a throwout bearing that the noise would only be there when the clutch is depressed. I got home and put an entire bottle of gear lube in the trans. Returned for a quick ride and the noise returned.

Looks like I'll be time studying the trans removal. I'll bet it will take me one hour the first time, and i'll get it down to 22 minutes after my 3rd removal (yep, I always have to do it three times to get it right).

I assume you checked the t-case oil level too? You know you check and fill those separately, right? The intermediate shaft/bearings in the t-case are the most susceptible to wear, so I'd definitely check that out.

Maybe the front bearing in the transmission. They are quick to go if the gasket is not oriented correctly on the bearing retainer.

To localize it have you tried shifting the xfer case into neutral while rolling? If you do this & the noise goes away it isn't the tranny, it's in the transfer case somewheres.

Still noisy? Depress the clutch- no noise, it's the tranny. Shift the tranny into neutral as well & let the clutch out, noise back? If so that will narrow it down to the input shaft bearing. No noise?- something in the gears or output bearing, or, input gear/shaft of the transfer case.

If everything is in neutral & the clutch is depressed & Jeep is still rolling & the noise is still there look to the transfer case output & various drivetrain bearings. Find a big hill, pull the drive shafts & go for a ride (Note-Works best if you start from the top of the hill)

Noise gone = xfer case or u-joints, noise stays = axles

Remove pinion & ring gears, push jeep back up hill. try again. Still noisy? Axle bearings. Remove axle bearings, drag Jeep back to top of hill...

michiganpinstripes bailed me out of a non-needed trans pull. He disconnected the speedo (NOT the swim suit) cable and noise is gone. Sad thing is that now I can't tell how fast I'm not going.

Thanks for a coaching. I'm sure I'll be back with more stupid questions.
