Is my dip stick too short?

Sorry but I didn't know any other way to ask the question. This has been bothering me for a couple of years now and I just have know. When I change my oil and filter I refill with the six quarts per my manual, however the oil as measured on the dip stick barely registers on the stick. After the engine gets warm it doesn't register at all until the oil drains back down. If I was to fill it to the full mark it I believe it would take another 1-2 quarts to get it there and I feel that can't be the right answer. My jeep doesn't leak any oil (from the engine anyway) and I don't want to over fill it. Can you guys look at the pics attached and tell me what you think. Is this the correct dip stick, is the tube too long, is the pan over sized.....The engine is a correct 1975 258 with no mods.

    Thanks

When I rebuilt my engine in 95, I lost the original dipstick. I bought a replacement, and like you it seemed I needed to add more oil to get it to register correctly. in99 I pulled the pan, on the side of the oil pump there are markings the correspond to the marking on the dip stick, and mine didn't line up. so i remarked the stick. but I don't know of any other way to be 100% sure.

I would think that if you knew the oil capacity of your engine, next time you change your oil , fill it to capacity then mark the dip stick accordingly. Dipstick indication doesn't take into account the oil in the filter.

IMO you have the wrong dipstick tube. My truck shows exactly full with 6 quarts. The dipstick is like yours, about 12" in length. However, the dipstick tube is about 2.5" in length, maybe 1.5" shorter than yours.

Also, I'd suggest you just cut off the tube rather than replace it. Wait for an oil change and put in your 6 quarts, drive around the block, and measure the distance on the dipstick from the oil level to the full mark. Cut that much off of your dipstick tube.

Thanks everyone. Tim that's what I was thinking also. When the engine is cold the oil registers about 1/8" on the stick. I'll measure that distance from the oil to the full mark on the dipstick and cut that much off of the tube.....good idea. Desert Runner, also thanks for the info about the oil mark on the oil pump as I didn't know that either.

Is the full mark on the dipstick for a cold engine or a warmed up engine?
