I am helping my dad on 67 Commando. It has a 30 rear end with 10" brakes.
We would like to change to 11" because all the hardware for the brakes are gone and also will need new drums
My question is will the backing plates frome a 1974 model 44 work. We know that we will have to redrill the mounting holes,

Thought I'd bring this to the top for you and maybe get some replies for you. I've had a D30 apart, unfortunately I didn't put it back together because a D44 was going in it's place and it was heading to the scrap yard. Can't recall if the backing plate holds the bearing cone in place or if it's the seal/retainer plate that does it. If it is the backing plate the D44 BP may have too large a center hole to hold the bearing in place.

Have you measured the overall width of the DJ rear diff? Most if not all are shorter than a CJ so I would guess that they are to narrow for a Commando as well.
