Do I need to mark the flywheel WRT the crank?

Also I'm replacing a 9.25" clutch with an 8.5" Flywheel is drilled for both and that's the one I ordered so I think I'll use it. Searches show it should be fine but I'd have more confidence if someone could verify that is still the case.

Shouldn't have to mark it, but what's a little extra insurance? Only takes a sec. AFAIK, the crank and flywheels were individually balanced, so you will be fine either way. As long as your flywheel is drilled for both patterns, either clutch will work. I think the kits for the 8.5" are easier to find.

Acording to my book the Hurricane came with a 9.25 clutch. The flywheel will have two tapered dowel bolts and four special bolts. I would observe closely on removal and note where the tapered ones came from.

I just pulled all 8 of the nuts and they appear to be the same? :?

The flywheel won't budge with all of the nuts off though. The clutch and its bolts came off fine.

Tapered bolts/dowels and the crank flange are holding it on there. A little PBlaster and some soak time and it'll come off. Watch your toes, it's a heavy bugger when you drop it!!! Don't break or strip the bolts, IIRC you have to drop the crank to get 'em back in there.

Why are you replacing the flywheel?

I'm having a machine shop clean the wear surface up. I'm replacing the clutch and heard that when you put a new clutch on you should get the wear surface milled a *little* bit to prevent clutch chatter. I should get the flywheel back in a few hours.

BTW I also wanted to thank everyone who posts to this board. It's been a very helpful source of information and encouragement. When the clutch cover bolts were turning over the engine I searched here...found a neat tip to loosen bolts across the center line of the engine to reduce torque.

That tip allowed me to take off the clutch and flywheel fasteners with a socket without having to hold the flywheel still. :tea:

When you go to put it all back in, don't forget to tighten the bolts in increments of ft-lbs, and in a crisscross pattern (like the nuts on the wheels or the headbolts) to keep warpage down to a minimum.
    Have fun, and be carefull!
