another PO problem

okay! today I decided to finally fix the short that drains the battery when parked. the PO said he couldn't figure it out and would unhook the ground cable to prevent the drain. anyway the problem was he had the alternator wired wrong.(#1 and#2 reversed). I know that #2 crosses over and connects with the battery wire, and #1 runs to my idiot light on the dash and from there to switched ignition. My question is can I bypass the light and simply wire from switched ignition to #1. the wires were pulled from the light and I don't think its going to work. also do you think by haven't this wired wrong it ruined the alterantor? (its a gm alternator)
