The title says it all. I am getting a grinding sound from my tranny/t-case in all gears. There is no impact on performance, but I wanted to see if anyone else has experianced this.

It would be helpful to describe your Jeep - year, engine, transmission, modifications, etc.

grinding ( or any other abnormal ) noise is always bad, time for a closer lookk into the problem. Looks like a probable rebuild of the trans, t-case or both

if you are getting a grounding sound, stop driving that thing and get looking into the problem. No grinding sound is a good thing. Any grinding sound is a bad thing. Most jeep shops will give you a set tear down and rebuild labor quote, you pay extra for any parts needed. That way you can control the cost.

1975 CJ-5 w/ 304. No real drivetrain mods, just a centerpoint dual friction clutch. T-90 tranny, never rebuilt.

If it has a T-90 then there has been a drive train mod as that was never offered in '75 with the 304.
    3 basic tranny's offered '72-'75
    T-14 3 speed behind the I-6
    T-15 3 speed behind the V-8

T-18 close ratio 4 speed. I know they were offered behind the I-6 but cannot remember if offered behind the V-8

I agree with the others. If you have grinding it needs to be inspected and most likely rebuilt.

Are you sure it's not the clutch?

The Centerforce Dual friction has weights on the fingers IIRC. I also recall in some Jeep applications they produce a rubbing sound from some unintended contact, having something to do with the position of the weights. I'm not real clear on what the issue was other than it made bad sounds.
The Dual Friction is not a good choice for Jeeps for this reason, as well as most of it's holding power is at high rpm. Jeeps dopn't spend much time at high rpm... ;)
The best centerforce choice for a Jeep is the Centerforce I clutch.

Check and double check that the sound isn't coming from your clutch before you go rebuilding trans or tcase...

I have the same problem that just started happening. It only grinds when I take my foot of the accelerator and the engine "lugs". For me it sounds like probably bearings in the transmision. I got a t14 which isn't really the best tranny in the first place. this is my second one. Anyways, I already took the inspection plate off and one day plan to have a friend drive while I listen around with a stethiscope. A long screwdriver works too. This method works unbelievably well for pinpointing where a noise is coming from. Also, I've been tied up in other projects latley, but I bet when I finally pull the drain plug on the tranny and t-case, one of them will probably dump an unusual amount of metal debris.

How difficult is it to drain the transmission and transfer case? Does anyone have detailed instructions on this procedure? Wouldn't this be an inexpensive maintenance project?

Remove plug from bottom of transfer case pan and bottom of transmission. Drain into acceptable receptacle. Inspect fluid for debris and dispose of in approved fashion. Refill with appropriate fluid to the bottom of the fill holes.

I like to drag a strong magnet through the old oil once its drained out into a drain pan. This will attract any metal shavings/fragments. More than a tiny amount of metal is bad news...
