Dana 44 key way

    I'm trying to put the hubs etc back together on my 61 CJ.
    I can't seem to keep the "key" in the proper position on the tapered axle and when I get the castle nut tight the key is about 1/8 inch or so inside the outer edge of the hub.
    I hate having to keep dragging out the puller to start over, any suggestions on how to keep the key out far enough? :?

    Put the hub on and then push the key in.

    Yes. And it doesn't have to be flush with the outside edge of the hub. It can be pushed in a bit, as long as everything slides together smoothly and the key slides in.

    Thanks for the suggestions and the great article. I will follow your suggestions which make more sense even though the manual said insert the key then press the hub on. That way just does not work, at least for me.

    Not sure which manual you have, but the factory Service manual says to install the hub, then slide the key in..

    What they said about putting the key in after the hub is on. Because of the taper of the key and keyway, if you put the key on first it could potentially slide up the ramped area of the keyway and cause a bind. Then when you tighten the nut down if can force the hub on and the key can blow out the inner portion of the hub where the seal rides. Seen it happen, no bueno...
