Well I have finally decided to do what Ive been wanting to my little cj5.

    I'm starting with a for the most part a bone stock '68 cj5 with a 225.

It needed a new radiator so a quick junk yard run and for 25 bones I had a 92 4.3l chevy Cheyenne rad that fits real nice.

It had two little holes but they got soddered and its working fine. cant complain for $25.

Next i had to deal with that forward facing manifold mostly because it will inter fear with the feature plans. So a set of headman headers took their place and some cherry poppers that are annoyingly loud and will be changed out shortly.

Well yall might not like it but the next phase is kinda jeep sin but I'm going to do it and thees nothing any body can do.

Another junk yard find (price was right). . . . there out of an 87 ish toyota pickup, they have 4.10s that may get changed, but for sure the rear will have a locker and they will both get rebuilt and cleaned up.

But before i do any thing else I need to find an sm420 tranny and a t-c most likely a dana 300.

Its a rough but solid little jeep that should make a nice fun wheeler and weekend bomber. By no means a show rig (just not my style).

    thanks
    STEVE

I've got Toy axles on my Jeep, I like them. Aussie locker in the rear, lockright and longfields in the front. I used trail gear high steer with a saginaw box and had to have the drag link shortened. Great setup, keeps the tie rod and drag link out of harms way.

Those axles you have are 1985 or older, 87's used IFS. By the look of the axles brace they're 1983-85.

For driveshafts I used the slip and yoke from the Toyota, and grafted rear Jeep cherokee (xj) driveshaft to hook to the Dana 300. D300's and XJ's use the same 1310 ujoint, and the tubing is very close between Jeep and Toy. I've got an SM465 trans and a Dana 300 with an AA adapter. In the back I ended up with an XJ front driveshaft with a CV, the tubing is smaller than the Toy and I had to have the Toy end turned down so the tubing would fit.

    Good luck with the project.

Awsome. . . . Your project sounds the same as mine, did you do all this in a cj or somthing else. I think im gonna go with a toyota box, A buddy of mine just went all hydo and 3link on his truck so his old set up is "almost" a bolt in job to what I have goin on.

How do you like the 465/300 combo. I was lookin for a 420 but I ended up with 3 or 4 465's instead.

It's a Jeepster, similar but longer. I love the 465, except that it pops out of low for some reason. What little I use it I just hold it in. The 300 is a great transfer case, really easy to tear apart and maintain, twin sticks are easy to build, and I put a sight tube in like the Atlas cases. I've only got 4.10 gears but with the 6.5:1 trans it works for me. 4.30's are quite common and cheap.

Well with my progress on my build with yota axles, you should beat me to the finish. I will defenetly be checking in and may steal an idea from you if I get stuck of like yours better....that is if you dont mind, ha. This is my first build as well and will consist of an '85 toy frt with a clutch pack (for now) and a '92 rear with a lock-rite (for now) both with 4:56's and am using 1.5" spacers in the front to match the rear width. Im useing an np 435 and D300. What are you going to be doing for the suspention? You stretching the WB at all or leaving it stock numbers?

This wont really be my first build, I used to mess around with blazers but I ran out of $/time to work on them and I always wanted to do somthin different with this jeep. I am trying to do it some what low budget, and with kinda off the shelf stuff. Most of the parts so far have been picked up at local swap meets or at junk yards.

The suspension in the front is gonna be stock YJ leaves SOA and out boarded with +1" shackles, and the rear is gonna be stock leaves SOA with a track bar. I replaced the rear leaves about 3yrs ago because one broke so they should hold up ok and the skinny leaves will flex like crazy. Im not going to stretch the wheel base that much the front is going forward an inch an for now the rear is going to stay put, but that will probably change.

Steering will be an after market toyota high steer kit with a toyota PS box.

As of tonight the front is mocked up/tacked in place. I am planning on finishing boxing it up tomorrow and starting on the PS. Ill try to get some pics up some time.

Well I got a little bit done today, I finished up the spring perches and got the frame boxed.

Im more or less waiting on the U-bolts and the high steer before I get to put the power steering in.

Still Pondering what Im gonna do about breaks. I went to an Fj-40 vented rotor with the intention of using the V6 caliper but I would love to find out if a Chevy caliper would work.

When you outboarded your springs, how far did you have to move the spring perches out? Did you mount the front first and then line up the rear mounts? I bought outriggers to do mine (since I aint a fabricator) and dont want to screw it up. This is my first build so im attacking everyones builds to sneak ideas from and gain knowledge where I can.

1.5" measured from the out side of perch to the frame. . . .. my spring perches are made of 1/4" material so you will need to take the thickness of yours in to account. You will me moving your springs 1.25" out on both sides.

Finally got the U-bolts in and got it up off the T-stands. I’m still waiting on my high steer arms.

It looks a little uneven in this photo but that is just because the concrete slabs are pitched one way and it has a soft left rear.

A little bonus that came with the Toyota PS box was this ram assist. I hadn’t planned on it but why not.

Once I get the steering squared away I will be on to the shock hoops and breaks then that should finish up the front end besides some paint and a few other little things.

I like the LTB's myself so far. Im running the 33x13.50. I dont care too much for that wide of tire on a light rig espeacially if you dont drop some serious psi but even running 33lbs (I flat tow it and have no compressor) they do purdy darn good. I got about 1600 miles on mine thus far and I can still read the word SWAMPER on the top of the big lugs.

I ran 34x10.5-16 LTBs for a while. The price is good and they bite into the earth like nobody's business.

As soon as mine wear out, I will be buying the 35x12.50 ltbs. In your yota axles, are they locked at all? Or are you planning on locking it? Also (sorry for asking so many darn questions) how did the E-brake hook up?

EDIT: It looks like you are running round ubolts in the front, driver side. I have been told by yota guys that the round bolts on the '84-'85 yota axles (since they have the full length bottom trus) have been known to let that side rotate just a smidge. If your interested, trail-gear.com sells the square ubolts which hold them really well and I think they are only like $49.00 for the plates and ubolts. Keep up the progress!!

If all goes well and I dont hit any real snags it will be drivable in a few weeks but "done" next spring. The motor is gonna come out this winter (for just a little tweeking) and I wanna do the body over this winter as well.

Ya I need to do some motor and body work myself. My tube has almost zero rust on it, just a couple surface area's where bolts are but thats about it. I may do the body now and worry about the motor later. I want to get that white paint off anyways. Have you been able to get the rear axle in yet? If so, do you have any pics of it in?
