Not sure if someone can help. I have a 1969 CJ5 and purchased a DUI distributor, but it won't clear the intake and needs to go down two more inches. Anyone had this problem, or any sugestions. There website said that it wont fit a 1971 V6, so I am not sure if the engine was swapped out.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

HEI is a tight fit, lots of info on here. You gotta grind the intake man. down and replace the first bolt with allen cap screw. I ordered A DUI and also had trouble. I ended up sending it back in the end because I was nervous about grinding as much materiel as it looked like I need to at the time. This was before I put the HEI in at a later date. That sucker is big! Good luck. Someone on here has probably had success.

    You have a pic?
The HEI distributor hits the LF corner of the intake slightly. You'll have to grind the corner off a bit, and replace the corner bolt with a button head bolt. Not 2" worth though..

This has been covered here, so you might use the search feature and see what you come up with.

I ground mine down and had the button head bolt there, but I didn't run the HEI for long as I decided to run the Pertronix.

That's interesting Patrick... Why did you go (back) to the Pertronix? I went Pertronix 5 years ago vice DUI because of the griding required, but have (after the fact) wondered "why not grind?"

That was some time ago, and I didn't know exactly how to convert an EF distributor. I put an OF pickup coil, cap and rotor on an EF distributor and ran it that way. Never ran quite right, obviously. Pulled it out and went to the Pertronix. I've thought about doing the HEI again, but the Pertronix and MSD coil work so well, I hate to change it.

I did the grind the manifold ,switch to cap bolt ,AND ground off one whole holddown latch on the cap, (cap is oly held on by 3 latches, NEVER been a problem ,but my rig is for rocks and not deep water fordging.I thought the HEI was a great upgrade for this little motor.

on your problem make sure the dist /oil pump shaft in the motor is seated all the way and that it's centered in the hole.drop in dizzy and turn the rotor till it drops in.... dizzy teeth will help it go in.this work on my other car don't know about the 225.

Yup, my reason exactly!! Did see an improvement over the stock Autolite distro, though. 'Course, I also subscribe to the "if it ain't broke" philosophy...

I don't really think there's a noticeable diff running HEI over a pertrinix set up. Both however are a great improvement over stock points. I'll probably go pertronix on my cj6 because it's easier.

There shouldn't be any performance difference. Both are a magnetic trigger.
Use a higher output coil with the pertronix, and it's compareable to the HEI.

The biggest bonus for hei is the availability of parts at every flaps out there. Grind Baby Grind! No problems

Do you have to take the intake manifold off to get it ground down.
    Thanks everyone for the help.

I have done several of em with everything still in place. I usually remove the bolt first and replace with a button head. It is a jigsaw puzzle, but very easy once you figure it out.

When I put in my HEI I started grinding and quit because it seemed like a lot and I wasn't sure I was doing it right. You don't need to remove the intake manifold.

Called a friend and he said "just keep grinding, it WILL fit". He was right.

For $25 from the junkyard (including plug wires!) it's been one of the best mods I've done. NAPA has all parts off the shelf for it.

My advice is - GO FOR IT!

If you post which intake you have (stock or not) someone might be able to post up a pic of what it looks like when it's done.

Will help to set your Target and help with the 'grinding too much' jitters :)

I could get a pic of mine, but I put a regular bolt back in it, so it's kind of hard to really see how it would look.

Its a stock intake, and its at the shop right now, so I can't get a pic. I just want to make sure it can be done the mechanic is good. I told him to go for. From what I hear it will from everyone it will work and hopefully no issues. What type of bolt works best?
