To start I believe this is a problem with my ignition. But as detailed as I can get, it sounds as if my starter will not disengage from the flywheel. Either the spring is worn within the starter, or power is still being supplied to the starter, which I can check in the morning. My question is if the starter is infact engaged on the flywheel, what other than incorrect wiring could cause this? Also can someone provide me with a schematic for the ignition wiring. Much appreciated.

Methinks you want the Flat Fender Tech or Early CJ...not the Intermediate. I could be wrong.

Since you are saying F head, I am going to assume you have the Prestolite starter. The Bendix on this starter is the FOLO-THRU type. This means it is thrust forward to the fly-wheel by inertia from the spinning of the armature. This means there is no electrical involved with the bendix like there is with the Delco types. If the bendix is sticking forwar, then you have to remove the starter and clean or replace the bendix. The bendix is returned to it's dis-engaged state by the running of the engine.

Ah that may be the case, thanks for the great info! Could there be a chance that the bendix is staying in the forward position due to the constant power to armature? Regardless further investigation into my prestolite is definitely needed.

Yes if your ignition switch is bad (won't return to on from start) then you have a bad ign switch. If your starter solenoid is wired wrong then it will either not work or run the starter all the time. I would remove the wire to the solenoid from the ign switch and turn key on and then take a jumper wire from + on battery and hit the solenoid and crank (start) the engine. Then remove your jump wire which will remove power to the solenoid and the starter bendix should return to the dis-engaged position. If it dows not--then you have a mechanical problem with the bendix.
