My pan gasket is toast and leaking badly at the front of the engine. How bad is it going to be, and are there any gaskets that anyone here has had bad luck with?

About like replacing a valve cover gasket, except it's on the bottom.;)
    Just buy a Fel Pro...

And fix the dimples around the bolt holes caused by overtightening.

Yes. Tap them back into shape with a ball pein hammer. I ran a bead of RTV on both sides of the gasket and barely snugged the bolts. Let it set over night, and then tighten the bolts, but not real tight. I do all my oil pan gaskets this way.

    I know too many teachers...,
so i've learned that you don't give them the answers, you give them the directions so they can investigate in a better manner, devellop a better self esteem, have a better confidance in themselves and feel a higher sense of self worth.
Then you beat the pan back into shape.
Then see if I get trash can fpr this post.

Thanks Patrick! It looked like it may be that simple, but was not sure if I had to watch for anything that might fall out or other stuff that may need to be removed. Looking at it from the bottom it looked as you said, I just did not want any suprises.

Felpro? I guess I will have to look at it, I didn't like their SBC gasket I used about 6 years ago.

Might double check the pickup tube while you're there. Mine wasn't tight when I did my pan last spring. I guess the gasket had compressed in the last 42 years/ 100K miles.
You should get a pickup gasket with your oil pan gasket ( at least I did with my Fel Pro)
There are other good gaskets out there; I just always use Fel Pro.

Definitely the pan, I can see where it is coming out when I rev the engine.

    A very fast drip.

Try NAPA. I got mine from NAPA for my commando. You can check NAPA online and get the part number. I gave up on Willy's Overland in Toledo (only 25 miles from my house), because they don't carry it and said I would be lucky if I found one. WTH kind of answer is that?

Guilty of PUI, My neighbor (special ed teacher) and me hoisted a few Jagers, sipped a few beers in rememberance of a friend that fell off of El Capitan. then on to toasting his FIL and my father.
    Sorry.
What I poorly said is that we should teach people to find the answers for themselves,ie. use the search function first.

    I can't tell you how much I whole-heartedly agree.;)

I can't even begin to guess how many times I've asked (told?) people to use the search function.

PUI/PWI - some think it's not a dangerous as DUI/DWI... That depends on where you do it, and if your wife sees it :)
