73 Dana 44 axle under a 76 can it work?

    i recently picked up a 1976 cj7 and i have a guy who has a 1973 dana 44 rear axle. will this fit stright over to a cj7?

    Will fit, have to move the spring perches. My brother has the same in his 76 CJ5

    Just want to amplify a little on what Andrew wrote - in case the OP doesn't understand the issues.

    Yes, it's the right width. You will have to weld on new spring perches, since the springs are further apart on the CJ-7.

    The ratios will be different. The '73 axle will be either 3.73 or 4.27 ratio, and the '76 axle will be 3.54 or 4.09. The front and rear axles have to match, so you'll have to change the ratios to match.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    if the CJ7 is/was a Quadra-Trac, the original axle would be offset, like an early D44, not centered.

    yes it is the quadratrac transfer case mated to a jeep th400 tranny. i like like strong automatic but i do not like the weak quadratrac t/c. i am planning to adapt a dana 300 t/c which came with the jeep and set up the dana 44 behind it all.

    I wouldn't say the QT is weak, but the 300 is far better.
