Rocker guards/Rock sliders and Fiberglass body??

So I was wondering what people were using for rock sliders/rocker guards on a fiberglass Jeep?? I have a '74 CJ5 with a fiberglass body. Are people mounting to the frame when they have a fiberglass body, or do the sliders that bolt to the body spread out the force if you hit something? I have a fear of bolting to the body and then cracking the fiberglass.

    Let me know,
    Scott

I have steel body and don't bash my rockers but here's my opinion. A heavy gage rocker shield with a rolled lip to protect the bottom edge of the glass is better than nothing. I think I'd put a few bolts through it. Any struts from the rockers to the frame will keep the rockers from being peeled off but they won't give much vertical support. But if you catch on the edge and slide sideways the struts will help keep the rockers from being pulled off, tearing the bolts out with it.

I'm planning on some angle iron bolted to the side of the tub. It would take quite a bit to crack the fiberglass, its stronger than you think.

got 3.5 inch angle 3/8 thick and welded 1/2flat ar plate bars to it sticking out at a 90 to the angle bolted to the tub from the bottom......kinda looks like an upside down T from the front or rear edge mashed plenty o rocks and logs and such no damage....yet

    sterclan,

Do you have any pictures of what you are describing? I can't seem to make any sense of what you are trying to describe.

    Thanks,
    Scott

There are a couple of jpgs in my 3B album showing how I did mine. My mounting system may not work on other glass bodies because I built a square tube steel subframe to fit under the floor of the "cockpit" and it is mounted to the normal frame body brackets plus one extra set I added. The rocker edge on the glass body is sandwiched between the subframe and the steel angle rockers, bolted both vertical and horizontal into the subframe with flat head hex drive bolts. It did make for a pretty solid arrangement which will support the entire weight of the Willys. The subframe also supports the exhaust skids and the seat mounts.

Made them, along with most of the other things on that machine.

I got them from one of our board members who used to make them, Firegod 33. I don't think he makes them anymore.
