Anybody use a MegaSquirt setup for controlling a late engine that has been transplanted into an early Jeep???

Are there any other stand alone control units available for the same price range??? MegaSquirt is apx $300--400 depending on what unit.

    Thanks,

For my project, a 1945 GPW w/'89 Chev MPFI v6 I have chosen MegaSquirt II. Although there are other choices, I felt I get the most bang for the buck using this unit.

Cost is reasonable: I spent about $400.00.
It will teach me at great deal about electronic fuel injection; I have to learn or the vehicle will never run.
It's highly tunable; If I make changes to the engine or even change the engine, I can re-tune accordingly and not have to have the computer re-chipped.

I am building the CPU now and will follow up later, preferrably when the jeep is sitting in the driveway running. :)

ED, sounds like you and I are in the same boat here, thanks for posting.

I am also looking at the MS II as the best fit for my conversion, spent the last couple days reading about it.

Please keep up with the reports as you make progress on the system.

    Good luck.

    Mike,

I will try to keep my progress up to date. I see that there are a several members who are looking at a number of fuel injection systems. Any and all information that the members post will help everyone in the long run.

So far I have built the stimulator and can say I past my first test as an assembler. Also, I have de-burred the MS-II case, checked the circuit board for fit and started assembly. So far so good.

As everyone in the Megasquirt community says, read the manual and then re-read the manual. Read the assembly instructions, forum posts and anything else you can on the subject. There is a ton of data to digest but again this is part of the reason I chose MS. I will know the system when I am done and not be intimidated by electronic fuel injection. One last thing, read the manual. Every time I do, I learn something new.

Yep, been doing that for the last couple days----too stinkin cold to go out doors to the shop.

The sheer volume of info is daunting to say the least, and the liberal use of acronyms and abbreviation doesnt help either. But, I am making progress in the rather steep learning curve.

Who did you get your kit from???

I can relate to that. Today is the first day in the last 5 that we got up to freezing. In fact we hit 34 today.

Definately want to read the installation instructions carefully. I am on my 3rd computer.

1st - MSI V1 and I decided not to build the flyback board to protect the injector drivers. I fried the injector driver circuit. This is not a problem on the V3 board as flyback protection is built into the design. Died just as I was backing out of my garage. Smelled really bad too.

2nd - MSII V3 board, Installed a Zenor Diode backwards on the tach circuit during build. Ran for about a year and then grounded out 12 volts through the DUI distributer and the Megasquirt. Fried the board and the internals for the distributer. thankfully it was sitting in my driveway when it happened. Luckily the CPU was not harmed. Again smelled really bad and the black smoke was disconcerting

3rd - MS2 V3 board. This one has been running great for several years.

Before long we may have 7 or 8 running on megasquirt. Currently there are 4 of us, including myself. Been using my MSI extra V3 board fuel only for about 3 years now. Runs good and no problems as of yet Not done tuning though. Great learning project for fuel injection. Jeep wheels much better with FI.
