Thinking about putting a rear seat in my 1969 cj5. What do most people think, is there enough room to sit? Should I leave it empty? I would like something like a Conferr style.

Short trips and the like it works. It's fine on trail rides for adults long as you can get out and stretch.

I guess it depends on whether or not you have people who want/ need to ride back there.
My two boys (9 and 11 years) do great in mine. I have had two adults back there, but there was enough booze involved that they didn't care, and I don't remember or care how much room they had.:D

I rode in the back seat of Animal with ah, another 'adult' at Tellico. We were fine, well, until I put that scratch on Animal while driving. Shoulda stayed in the back seat!

If you can mount it higher and don't mind the look of the seat back being so high it'd be much more comfortable. There is precious little legroom - but most rear seats are only 6" - 8" off the floor and definitely puts your knees in your eyes at times.

Underseat storage is a good reason to do what Boyink suggested even.

For me, the factory rear seat is great! I've ridden back there for fairly long rides, and don't have a problem... but I'm only 5'9"/ 180lbs!:) The kids NEVER had problems riding back there. For dirt camping we pull it out and have a "phansy" love seat around the campfire...

Thank you to everyone for the help, I just ordered one and some seat belts.

How much space should there be from the tailgate to the back of the seat? Anyone have any pics?

I've got a factory fold and tumble in my 2A; the seat back is about 4-5 inches at the top from the tailgate; the taper widens near the floor; enough that I carry a lot of tools and junk behind there.

I'm going the other direction, I have a rear seat and think I will be removing it so I can store/carry things there, right now the spare tire in lying on the seat.

I found a non-jeep folding rear seat of unknown origin and we determined we can mount it to the floor and add belts so I am going for it. my kids are headed for teen-age years they're flexible,. and once it is done they want rides!
My seat will only be about 4 -05 inches off the ground, for me at 6 foot it is like looking through my knees, but for them it will be acceptable.

The factory seat was plenty comfortable for me - but realize that it tilts back a lot (ca 10-15 degrees?), putting your butt close to the floor and raising the front of the seat so your knees aren't so high. This makes the back tilt back too. If you sit back, it's fairly comfortable for average-height adults. I used to sit two Scouts in the back all the time - they were either comfortable or caught up in the experience - no complaints!
