When I removed the flywheel off the butt-end of the crankshaft, I noticed a V-notch on it around the perimeter. It looks like it's supposed to be there, but what for? Does it have anything to do with the flywheel alignment? The FSM and Chilton's were silent regarding this. Thanks!

Depending on what you mean by a V Notch it could be for balancing the flywheel. When you try to put the flywheel back on you will notice that it will only line the holes up one way… Thus the balance comes into play.

Thanks Warloch. I took a pic of it (below). Notice the V-notch at the top? Also notice the even bolt pattern, so the flywheel could be installed any which direction. Can someone chime in about what else to look for when installing the flywheel onto the crank? Thanks gang.

says in my FSM to mark them, crank and flywheel, before removal for proper re-alignment
    don't re-call if I ever did that

Unless yours is different from mine (just did the fly wheel on 2 different engines and they were the same) - just try to put it back on - if you don't have it right several bolts will not line up. I slip it on while it's on the hoist, rotate one bolt hole at a time till they all line up clean, then bolt her down. I went around 2X the last time (after I marked the spot) to be sure it wouldn't bolt any other way.

    :stout:

OOPs forgot to answer your question. My engine rebuild shop said the one on the crank is for alignment and ones on the back of the fly wheel are for balance. 'course I couldn't get my hand down there to mark that :p

    Thanks guys.

The bolt holes line up no matter how I try to install it b/c it's an even bolt pattern. It is NOT setup to bolt on a certain way. So therefore I wonder what the V-notch means in reference to the flywheel, if significant. The flywheel itself has odd holes drilled thru it (even a rectangular hole), but yet I have no idea on what that tells me regarding installation onto the crank. I gotta belive that that V-notch has a specific purpose..."alignment" to what exactly? Thanks for the help fellahs. :stout:

The fly wheel in my 61 ( it's out of a 64 Buick) can only go on one way. I have 2 other V6's, but haven't really checked to see.

Thanks Mike. :coffee: I'll go back and look. I've already installed the flywheel, and I just slapped it on. I find it hard to believe I nailed it on the first attempt to line 'em up, but I suppose I got lucky. Or maybe it's because it's a pre-Dauntless 225. :? I'll have to go back and check my spare crank & flywheel.

Still, I sure wish I knew what that notch referred to.
