See now that I found this site I have all sorts of questions.

I am hearing a noise im thinking from the transfer case, Last winter I had the jeep in 4wd and came off of a dirt road and on to pavement, no longer needing it in 4wd i slowed down like barley rolling and reached down to pull the stick out of 4wd and heard a clunk now i can drive fine in 2wd and at speed no noise but i put in 4wd and hear a clunk, ( first one souded like I had dropped my driveline,) i didnt but that was the noise, and input on what i did? im not sure what tranny i have it is all origional, 69 jeep 225, 3 speed, has the overdrive stick and of course the 4wd stick, any help would be greatfull.

    Thanks guys!!!!

Start with the simple stuff first. Check the U Joints in the front drive shaft. Is the clunking continuous in 4wd? If the driveshaft is OK you can drop the pan on the T case and inspect it. Look for metal shavings in the oil and inside the case. It sounds like you may be pulling the T case out. Your tranny should be a T86.

This could be due to different sized tires from the front to back. A quick check for this is jack up one tire at a time and run a tape measure around the outside of the tire and size up the fronts to the backs. I don't know what the margins are for tire miss match but, a local tire shop can tell you. Of course they'll try and sell you 4 new tires, though.

I know I have all the same size tires, 32-11 50 15 bfg's mud ta's, so im tinking it would not have been that, umm, rear, and front driveline seem to be in good order the u-joints seem to be good i lifted the wheels off the ground and was not excessive slop, Im thinking transfer case is going to need a re-build,,, and teh clunk is continuous in 4 wd but not in 2 wd , ...... thanks guys for your input, anything furhter i could check would be good, i will be pulling the pan to see this weekend it looks like.

could it be different tire size due to different air pressures? i remember a buddy having a problem with his lockright because he blew a bead then when he refilled the tire he did not check the pressure, it was like 8lbs off, didnt look it though.

I work on a race car here in Denver and we have what we call a stagger stick that we put around the outside of the tire and can tell the circumference.

I can test 10 tires at the same time with, tires from the same design with the same pressure and get 10 different sizes. I'm not trying to make you mad, I've just done this before. Air them up and see, you'll be suprised. If the size difference is too big you'll think you're stucjk in 4 wheel or hear the clunk going between. Here's another test try putting the tranny in nuteral<?? brain fart> and then shift the tcase, if the clunk is still there without any power coming from the tranny then, it could really be tire mismatch.
