Flanged D44 Axle Bearing

I feel really dumb asking this one! I need to replace a bent axle on my 71 rear D44, flanged axle. I went to my FLAPS yesterday and they had a number but could not find any supplier that still carried the part. Seemed odd to me. I would think this is a pretty common part. I hope to get mine apart this weekend but thought someone would have a P/N for the bearing and seal.

Krage has them just was hoping to get one closer to home. The parts store I went to is pretty old school. They were able to find some speedi sleeves for my D18 a year or so back. Even had the old parts books with the numbers in them. He called 3 of his warehouses and no one had it.
They did carry the tapered stuff.

Randy's R&P carries them. "Set 10" for the wheel bearings. $40 for bearing, cup and seal.

 

It's the same bearing and seal set for almost all Dana 44 flanged 30 spline axles from '70 1/2 to '75 CJ's and all flanged Dana 44 Waggy's, pickups, most Fords, GM's etc. If they have a hard time finding it for a '71 just have them look for a '74 CJ-5 or a '75 Wagoneer.

I took the axle out this weekend. I forgot how easy they are to remove.
Anyway it turns out it was good timing. The splines are definitely twisted, guess I got lucky and didn't break it on the trail. Now I need to take the short side apart and make sure it is not twisted too. Pic here: http://picasaweb.google.com/jzeber5/RearAxle#

just for giggles, paint a line down either of the axles, from one end to the other.
next time you have to pull them out, you can look at that line and see how much they may have twisted since installation.

No, unfortunately the splines shouldn't look like that. Time for a replacement. Check the short side carefully. They are usually the ones that twist first....

Picked up a replacement long side axle from R&P. Waiting for the bearing and seal to come to re-install.
OK to use the twisted one as a spare?

 

Yeah, as an emergency temporary get-you-buy for now spare. I wouldn't run it too hard though.

So I was out looking at the old axle and realized I need to remove the seal and bearing to get the flange off. If I wanted to use the old axle as a spare do I need to find a new flange also? I always thought the bearings were a pressed fit.

 

Just took the short side apart and it looks good! I guess I lucked out.

 

They are or should be. Collar needs to be removed, then the bearing, then the seal, then the retaining flange. I've found I usually have to break the collar to remove it so I can press the bearing off.
New axle should come with a retaining flange. Make sure you get one with the axle.

 

Got it from R&P I'll go check the box.
OK hopefully last question. Torque spec for the flange bolts? My manual is too old and does not have the flanged axle listed.
