after the wheeling trip yesterday we were all enjoying some cold refreshments and looking at the filth we created  anyway, we noticed that my jeep wasnt leaning o the side anymore so we thought it was just the way it was sitting. i moved the jeep all around the yard and parked it again and still no lean. whta would have caused this any ideas. was it possible that a shock was "stuck" after the flying trip off the trailer, and all the flexing yesterday "popped it back" i am about to not spend the money on the lift now if this is fine and just replace the shocks and put the money into her somewhere else. any help or thoguhts is always appreciated

Erik: More than likely, a spring pack was stuck together.

thats what i was thinking. before the trailer incident it had been sitting in the garage for about 8 months. maybe i will just replace the shackles with some greasable ones and put a set of new shocks on. then i can take the rest of the money and put it towards power steering or something

Erik: I don't recall the "trailer incident", but you could give the spring packs a good soaking with WD40 or whatever is your favorite.

jim: my jeep decided to fly off the front of a car tariler after a guy in front of us locked his brakes up. no damage to jeep or truck except i had to replace my body mount bolts due to a couple being bent. i guess i will just leave them as there doesnt seem to be any sagging now. i still think im going to replace the shocks with some really good ones and maybe even the shackles. can i change just the shackles? and not the springs

Yup. No reason you can't change the shackles to any type you want.

I'm not a big fan of longer shackles, but they were already on mine. I have 1.5" shackles (4.5" between the bolts) that result in a 7/8" lift.

They will decrease your caster angle in the front which might cause a very slight weave, but I have not really noticed it in mine.

I ain't buying it. That line about petroleum lube causing spring sag. I have been dragging a fingerload of grease down the sides for years. There was some good ideas about teflon, lock ease, etc. I had not thought of before. But back to the story...

We are talking about spring steel here aren't we?? There might be slightly different varieties of the stuff, but I bet they are are almost the same. Springs, like say perhaps valve springs?? Where do they live? Plus chemical reactions are faster warm. How about the 200 degrees or so at the valves?? Drenched in motor oil! For years.

Fithian62: Yea, I kind of question that also. My Dad's boyhood friend owned Hollywood Spring and Axel. He was very well known in the '40's & '50's as the premier spring fabricator for the Indy cars. He would tune them by "ear".

My Dad and I, when I was a kid, used to hang out in his shop on Saturday's. One day he had a Rolls Royce, '50's vintage, Silver Shadow in to replace a broken leaf on the rear. Those springs were polished like a mirror from the factory. Now, get this, they were wrapped in heavy leather completely around the springs with 4 zirk fittings on each side of the spring. You lubed them with chassis grease! :)
