I found a PVC box at work to mount the 2 solinoids for my Winch. I was trying to find a place to mount the box and didnt really find a good location. How close to the winch or battery does the solinoids have to be?? Does it matter??

Also do the solinoids have to be totally sealed against water for them to work?? I am kind of against using the box i have under the hood because it is a little bulky, i was thinknig bout just mounting the solinoids on the fender and wire them up. I can use liquid tape to seal the terminals, but is it totally necessary to box the solinoids up?? I know WARN has them in a box on the 8274 but then again it is outside the jeep, at least being under the hood it will be away from the elements. And if i am in mud or water that deep i wont need a winch to get out :(

I would mount them so as to have the shortest run of cable. Less distance means less voltage drop in the wire.

As for sealing them up I think they would be fine just under the hood. They are basically starter solenoids aren't they? I know my starter and solenoid were completely submerged in some nasty coal water at Windrock and they still work fine ;)

Thanks Joe. I do not have that far of a run for the cables. I guess they will be fine then on the fender. Good no bulky boxes ;) Only thing i have to make is a mount to plug in the remote control but that will be easy.

    Dan,
For fun, here's a pic of the Ramsey box on my pass. fender next to the battery. You can see the remote control plug that faces the firewall, and there's a hole in the firewall for in-cab control. HTH.

Dan I'd make a shield of some sort, if water hits the fan and splashes the 'noids, well its just insurance, know what I mean.

i used a couple of L brackets from the hardware store and a big hoseclamp and fastened them to winch you could do the same just mount the L brackets to the box you have and clamp it to the winch with the hose clamp

Only 2? There should be 4 mounted on the plate under the cover.

They are just Ford style starter solenoids so they can brave the elements well. Mine were destroyed from road salt. Need to buy four new ones by spring.

I can use 2 because the Bellview only has power in. If you have power in and piower out then you would need four, that is what i understand about it :)

Well i got the solinoids bolted on, and wired to the winch, i just have to decide what battery to use. I am thinknig bout a marine battery. I am looking for top and side posts, bad thing is i looked today at the auto store and the only top and side mount battery is flip flopped (+ & -) so i would have to run a long + cable and shorten th enegative cable :(

They make Optimas with the top and side posts. Just make sure that you don't attach the winch to the side posts. The solonoids are pretty tolerant of Mud and water, consider where your starter solonoid is.

BTW, the controller and socket went out today. Enjoy.

Oh I didnt know not to connect them to the side posts, maybe i should just mount everything to the top posts then. Thanks again for the control!!! I have been wandering around the jeep to find the best spot for it, i may mount it on my dash or by the solinoids. I was going to have 2 switchs, one on the remote and one on the dash i think for ease of use the single control will work best.

FWIW Dan, I enjoy using the remote control exclusively. Most of the time when I use it I'm not sitting in the driver's seat, but somewhere in front or on the side. :)

P.S. Did the pic finally come thru??

Yup I finally got to see it. The box you have is much smaller than the one i found.I have them on the fender well right next to the battery, i may make a rubber cover or something, but since i do not have a fan on the motor i will not splash water up to that point, so they will be pretty much safe, i will put a bit of liquid tape on the terminals to protect them.

I was thinknig that about the remote, it will be easier to just have it remoted , i know i wont be in the cab much to winch it ;)
    Thanks!!!
