I am getting ready to install my distributor. I marked the spot on the distributor where the #1 plug goes. I am a little uncertain on the proper way to install it so that it works correctly. Can anyone give pointers or guidance on the proper installation?

    V6?
Bring the #1 cyl to TDC, then install the dist. so that the rotor tip points to the #1 plug (approx. 7 or 8 o'clock position). HTH.

Here is the best way if you are new at this. get a soft drink straw, pull #1 plug and place the straw in the hole. get a 1/2 drive rachet with a socket that will fit the nut on the lower pulley in front of the engine.
I think it is 3/4 to 7/8" somewhere around there. now turn the engine with the rachet. when the straw moves upward check the timing mark to see if its near 0. when the straw moves, its either right on or 180* off.
The best way to remove the dist is to mark where the vac advance was pointing when you pulled it out.
If you didnt do that, no big deal. Once you find top dead center on #1, put the dist back in. leave the bolt a little loose and have someone turn the key. If it dosent fire up move the dist a little one way and give it a chance. If no luck turn it the other way a little.
If you have a timing light, it will be alot easier. But you need to get #1 piston at the top of the stroke, with the timing tab showing close to 0 degrees, both valves closed.
My v6 dosent exactly point to #1. Some dist caps have a very faint mark for the cylinders. Get a chart or pic that shows how the l and r bank are numbered, or use a pencil and draw it under the hood along with the dist rotation direction.
Hope this helps. A friend of mine has "aw **** painted under his hood.

15/16" socket on a breaker bar works best for me (V6).

    I like the straw idear. Do you use a regular sippie-straw, a bendy-straw, a Frostee spoon-straw, or one from a Big-Gulp?? :D
