I just got out of the motor cycle world and decided to bite the bullet and bought a 75 cj5 that is in ok shape, has some bondo in some places but paint is good. It had some exhaust leaks on the what I seem to see be called the stove under the intake, well when I pulled the air filter off their sat a holly 650 carb and a offenhauser intake with some wonderful stripped out studs and bolts I guess from when he put it back together. Well it ran great when I bought it now all exhaust leaks are fixed and she runs just want idol for some reason can anyone help or give advice.

Check your vacuum lines and check for vacuum leaks around base of carburetor and manifold. A bad leak will give a poor or rough idle.

    I6 or V8? A 650 may never idle well on an I6.

Its a 258 straight 6 and that’s what I was told and I don’t know why he thought it was a good idea to put such a big carb on a stock straight six. So I guess I’m looking for a Holley 390 is what the local carb shop said I needed so if anybody has one and is looking to get rid of it either by trade or just to sale I would be thankful.

Also if someone could direct me on how to put up some pics i would be glad to post my new purchase.

Motorcraft 2100 is also a good choice for an I-6 according to quite a few guys around here. Probably cheaper than any Holley, too. Some will say the Holley 390 is a bit large for an I-6, too. Motorcraft 2100 are very common on Ford engines so you need not pay a lot for one.

You can set up a pic library at photobucket.com pretty easy and/or paste the image "img code" into the reply. I have done the former but not the latter yet.

Ok so i dont know why i didnt do this in the first plus but i feel real dum I ran the carb number and come to find out it is a 390, i guess the guy i bought it from didnt know or just spouted off 650. But my next Question is will a header off of a 84 model cj7 work on my 75 cj5, it seems like the only thing i can see is the tubes curve under the oil pan instead of straight back under the body.

I don't know why the header wouldn't work just fine. I would not expect any interference. Is it a Clifford Research header with the two exhaust outlets for dual exhaust?

That will be it then. Pacesetter aren't know for their high end headers but they are OK. It will fit your Jeep. Pacesetter lists the same PN 72C1191 for the AMC six 232 and 258 from 72' all the way to 90'. http://www.pacesetterexhaust.com/images/72C11291.jpg If you want to have a header, go for it. Hopefully you are getting a good price on it. Nice looking Jeep by the way. It looks great and I suspect would need very little to be done to get out and enjoy it. Did you get it running better? It kind of sounded like you have a vacuum leak. Also if it is running way rich in the bottom end it could be a blown power valve. It can be a common problem on older style Holley carbs that do not have a check valve to protect the power valve. There should be no reason why you can't get that carb to work with some effort.

the header was free he gave me the whole motor also just to get it out of his garage and the only reason why im putting it on is the guy I bought the jeep from stripped out some threads on the exhaust manifold so im just waiting on a header gasket from jegs which will be here tomorrow and hopefully it will be on the road again. Other than that it has a small rear main seal on the engine leak and that’s really it. Thanks for all the help and comments everyone has been helpful if I run into anymore problems I will be back for more answers.
