Dont know much about these jeep trannys. i dont even know whats in there? 3 speed. BUt started the jeep yesterday and had an awfull chatter, grind clank, wierd noise. It sound like a clutch to me. I would make the noise all the time. Clutch in or out, in gear or out. But it would go away completly, then randomly come back. Clutch? throwout bearing? What ya thnk?

When the vehicle is moving? When sitting still?
Check oil in the transmission and transfer case? Check clutch adjustment? Check motor and transmission mounts? Clutch linkage?

Both, Moving ot sitting. In gear or out. Clutch in or out

What fluids do the trans and t-case take? Might as well change them

Gear oil. I like 85w90 but your needs may differ. If in cold area 75w90 or something similar may be better. This kind of info is found in the Factory Service Manual and is a good investment for any Early/Intermediate Jeep owner;):tea:

With the engine at idle and the clutch pushed in, are you able to shift thru the gears with no problem? If so then realize that the clutch disk and transmission is not turning so should be no noise from those. However the pressure plate to fly-wheel are. How long has it been since you last started this jeep? Did squirrels drop a bunch of nuts through the bell-housing? Do you have a dust shield on? Could you have picked up some gravel in the bell-housing?

Yes with CLutch in and working through the gears it still makes the noise. But it did go away for a few then came back. And it started this the other day. And had never done it before. It was driven like 3 days prior
