I'm replacing the headlight switch on my '75 CJ5. The reference line above is what the shop manual says to do to get the old switch out. Unfortunately, for the life of me, I can't figure out how to "remove [the] retaining nut". From the dashboard, it looks like a circle with gaps at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock. Is there a special tool I'm missing?

I appreciate all the hand holding y'all are doing while I try to get this doggone thing ready for winter.

That's the right piece. Sometimes they are really on there tight. I've always used a flat screwdriver on one side and lightly tap the end with a hammer to unscrew it...but you run the risk of having it slip and gouging your dash.

I've used a cheap pair of snap ring pliers that have a 90 degree angled head.
Grind the prongs to the right thickness

I have used my fine needle nose pliers for this - stick the tips in the slots and turn. I've also used a small screwdriver to chisel it off. The snap ring pliers would work better though.

Jeep likely supplied a 'spanner' for this purpose to dealers. (NB the dealers did not get the special tools for free...)

Needle nose usually do the trick. Give it a shot of WD40 the day before and repeat the next day. If it is REALLY stuck, try pushing on the switch itself from the back of the dash to relieve some of the pressure off of the mount.

Once replaced, a rubber washer on the back side will give enough tension where you don't need to overtighten and make removal easier next time.

Thank you to everyone. A shot of Liquid Wrench on consecutive days and a hammer applied to the handle of a small screwdriver got the nut off. All went perfectly.
