Generator Help.

    Been trying to get the cj's wiring going. A little backstory, i bought a rebuilt generator off ebay for 50$. We had the generator checked at a starter and alternator repair shop and it checked good. We installed the generator and new regulator on the jeep. We put the volt meter onto the battery terminals and started the jeep the battery stayed at 12V and then we checked voltage at the generator amperage terminal and it showed over 100V. Then we had smoke then small fire out of the back of the generator. All this happened with in 35 to 45 seconds. We took the generator off and seen the wire that connects the brush to the amperage terminal burnt in half.

    We took it back to the repair shop and had it checked out they repaired the wire and checked out good but couldn't get the generator to spin by grounding case and putting 12V to amperage terminal. We installed the armature into a good known generator and it did not spin. We put the good known armature into our case and it spun. we thought the armature was bad. now we have our case and a known good armature with new brushes and it checked out good.

    We installed the generator hooked up the regulator and started the jeep we had the volt meter on the battery and it was reading off the 20V,200V scale on the volt meter. Each scale was ran for about 5 seconds, we did not want to burn up the generator again but when we shut down the engine with the key we heard a sizzling sound and saw some smoke coming out the back of the generator. we disconnected the negative cable from the battery and the sizzling stopped.

    here are some pictures of how we had it wired. Anyone have any ideas on what we are missing.

    I would be leary of the voltage regulator. got a napa one on my heep and it works just fine.

    I was thinking the same thing. I will stop by napa tomorrow see if they can order me one.

    Anybody else have any other ideas, open to just about anything right now.

    That delco generator was made with two options of being an "A" circuit or "B" circuit. The rebuilder would know which it is by opening it up and looking inside. This would also determine how the generator will be initially polarized. I would take the voltage reg and gen to the elec shop and have them test both together. Make sure he polarizes it NEG ground. Make sure your battery cables are connected for NEG ground.

    Sorry new to this generator thing, Walt do you mine going into a little bit more detail about the A and B circuits. At first i had field and arm on the opposite side (no A or F mark on generator). My builder said this was wrong so i marked them what he said they should be. I had them set to where the top post was field and the bottom post was arm, this worked okay but the voltage was jumpy but nowhere as high.

    Also does anyone know if the generator only generates if spun one way or does it work regardless what way it spins?

    Tnx haighfam. dafeeesshh the Vernco site explains it much better than I and has pictures. Your generator should be designed to run clockwise as viewed from the front. The fan should push air thru the gen and out the back.

    Thanks for all your help. I am picking up a new regulator today from napa, my grandpa and friend of my dads both have spare generators so hopefully one of the armatures will work. This is one of the last things i have left to do on the cj so hopefully be cruising around this weekend.:driving:
