I have a 67 cj5 with the dauntless 225 motor. I have headers, aluminum intake and a mild cam. I put a 450 cfm holley on it and it runs good, just a little rich. I was wondering what jet size everyone else is running on the 390, and 450 holley carbs.I have a jet kit but it starts at 66, I have 56 in it now. thanks in advance for any help. Oh I am at sea level on oregon on the coast.

Check your idle mix settings. I recently put a Holley 2300 2-barrel on the M715 and it ran rich until I leaned out the idle mixture.

Idle mix screws are on the outboard sides of the metering block, in between the carb body and the float bowl. They're only on the primary side of the carb, there will be blank spots on the secondary metering plate, no screws.

Running at idle, turn one screw in (clockwise) until the engine sputters and then back it out until it idles smoothly again. Repeat with the other side. This should get you in the ballpark.

Also, it is worth checking the float setting while you are at it. There will be a slotted plug on one side of the float bowl, it should be about a 1/4" in diameter. With the engine off, put a wadded up shop rag under the bowl, directly under this hole and remove the plug. No fuel should run out. Bounce the fender on the same side of the Jeep that the plug is on, and a drip or two of fuel should run out.

Have an assistant start the Jeep while you watch the hole. If fuel pours out, STOP ENGINE. Your float level is too high. Loosen the set screw on top of the float bowl and adjust the nut until the float drops and fuel stops running out. Replace the rag and have the assistant start the engine again. Bounce the fender again, and repeat the process over and over again as needed.

If no fuel at all comes out of the hole when you bounce the fender, than the float may be too low. Adjust it upward, using the same "fender test" until you get just a drop of fuel out of the hole.

Now, remove all the soaked rags, and put a dry one back under the bowl. With the sight plug still out, have your assistant start the jeep again ad there should be barely any fuel dribbling out of the sight hole when it idles. If you have it dead nuts on, you should be get barely a trace of fuel running out at idle.

    Did I miss anything guys?

    Steve,

I like to use a vacuum gauge when setting the idle mix screws. Other than that I think you got it...

Secondary techometer also works well, if you have one. Enrichen until RPM doesn't increase anymore, then lean roll it 20 rpm....

I put 57s in my Holley 2300, 5000' above sea level. Seems about right. 61s are what they come with (sea level jets)
