Jon and I are going to replace the timing gear tensioner this weekend on the 225 engine/cj5 jeep he just purchased. Any recommendations on manufacturers and place to purchase it from? Only want to do this one time....Thanks

I replaced mine several years ago with an Edelbrock chain since it does away with the tensioners. It's more expensive than a stock replacement, but like you, I wanted the thing to last as long as possible. Didn't mind spending the extra $$. Go ahead and rebuild your oil pump while you have everything apart as well.

Thought I haven't replaced mine yet, I would go with the Edelbrock mentioned above. Its a roller chain style and gets rid of the plastic gears that come with the stock replacements ;)

i'll third the edelbrock unit. it's a bit more expensive than just the timing chain, but if i remember right my chain was somewhere around $20 and didn't include the gears, let alone looking like it was about to fall apart in my hands... it's on a list for rebuild once i get out of school and manage to get back into the black ink somehow.

here's what everyone is talking about EDL7828:

One more for the Edelbrock. It's part number 7828 if I remember right. I bought mine from Summit and like mentioned above, throw in a hi-volume oil pump kit too.

I went with the Edelbrock from Summit in June of 2003. I found one of the old tensioner bolts in the bottom of the pan. Also used the high volume mellings oil pump. I now have an oil leak in the pump area - not sure what's up with that.

RRich on the Jeepster forum at ORC once wrote something about the tensioner style setup was better due to the torque pulses from the odd fire. However, it seems like the Edelbrock (non tensioner) style has worked well for me and many others.

Sorry, gotta disagree on the Edelbrock thing. I know lots have used them with no problems but mine wore out in no time. Wore out so bad in fact that I couldn't set timing accurately. Put on a replacement Cloyes double roller and have had no problems since. The Edelbrock lasted somewhere around 30,000 miles. The Cloyes has lasted since 1995 and an engine rebuild. I'd definitely go with the high volume pump. The Melling unit is excellent. Have had great luck with them. Nickmil.

Isn't the Edelbrock made by Cloyes?

To be truthfully honest I thought so, because if you lay the 2 together you can't hardly tell them apart.

I believe they are, but to Edelbrocks specs as far as materials, etc. Just like Ford used Warn hubs that were built to Ford's specs not Warn's. That can explain the differences in longevity. Don't get me wrong, I like Edelbrock's products, have used them and will continue to use them for years. Just not their timing sets. Have buddy's that have had similar problems with their timing sets also. I went to install one set on a guy's SBC and it was so loose out of the box that it wasn't usable. Put a Cloyes replacement on it and it has been fine. That was 3 years ago. Nickmil.

Nick: I think we had quite a discussion about this a while ago. I thought you used the Cloyes "link plate" type?

Ordered a Cloyes Gear from Summit. Checked with a couple of car racers here in the plant and they advised to spend the extra $50. Apparently the Cloyes chains are "pre-stretched" and are true "full-rollers".

Regarding the high oil flow pump, the Summit man says I have to buy a Melling "rebuild kit" ($32.39), which converts the stock to a "high flow" pump. He also said "the kit even come with a drill bit"....can't wait!!!!
