I am looking to order Powertrax Lock-Right lockers for my 1962 CJ5 but have run into an issue with selecting the correct model without actually pulling the axles and counting splines.

    1962 CJ5
    F134
    3-speed
    5.38 gears

The tech page says that the front axle should be a Dana 27, 10 spline, 10 bolt axle. http://www.earlycj5.com/technical/axles/#one

However, on the Richmond gear ordering page, it lists the Dana 25 as running from 1955-1965 and also being a 10 spline 10 bolt axle. http://www.richmondgear.com/powertrax/jeep1lr.pdf

Also, on the rear axle, the tech page, and the Walck's site, the correct axle should be a 19 spline Dana 44, however, again, on the Richmond gear page, it shows it as a 10 spline Dana 44.

I *think* I need to order a Powertrax 2115 for the front and a 2413 for the rear, but would like to be sure before paying out $700 for the lockers only to find I have the wrong parts.

*I went to the Tierra Del Sol Jeep gathering this past spring, and while I made it much farther stock than anyone expected, I did have to be pulled up one hill that had talcum powder fine dust that my tires just couldn't find any traction in and I don't want that to happen again. Perhaps lockers front and rear is too much, but this Jeep sees the vast majority of its time off-road, on maybe a 50 mile drive to get to the off-road, or being towed on a tow bar behind my truck to get to the off-road if the distances are any further than about 50 miles. I also have a new set of STA Super Traxion tires coming if I can find a distributor. Fig A. http://www.stausaonline.com/light-truck/super-traxion.html*

    Thanks in advance all!

Given the age of our vehicles, anything could have been swapped in, or swapped out. When I got the rear locker for my '64, I thought it was prudent to pull the axles and count the splines. I know it's a pain, but that's the only way to know for sure, and save any other headaches down the road. I run a Lock-Right in the rear, and a POWR-LOK in the front. You can definitely tell when the hubs are locked, the steering is alot harder (Ross steering). You might try just putting one in the rear and seeing if that is enough, if not, you can always add the front locker later.

That's weird that they have a separate listing for the 25 vs. the 27. In stock form you can swap 27 side and pinion gears into the 25 and vise verse. I've done it more times than I care to count.

Regardless, it's easy to tell if you have a 25 or 27 front. Look for the model # cast into the top of the pumpkin or on the lower right side support web when looking at the cover.
Also another rule-of-thumb way to tell is if the vent is in the cover only it should be a 25. If in the housing then it should be a 27.

I agree, I'd pull a shaft to see what's actually in the rear before ordering parts.

:iagree: You have to pull the shafts to install the Lock Right anyway.
