My spider gears need replaced. PO blew them out(stripped gear teeth) and welded them up (locker). I want an open differential. What would be easier, changing the spiders or finding another differential carrier with the spiders intact ,install my ring and re-assemble? I have had carriers out before but I have never replaced spiders before. Is it difficult?

With a different carrier you would have to set the backlash on the r&p, just changing the spiders wouldn't change the setting. Of course you should still check it. Spiders are easy to change. There should be a roll pin holding the cross shaft in, good idea to replace it too.

wouldn't it depend on how the spiders are welded? it's be difficult to clean up a bead so that the new spiders would spin freely... or at least i would suppose it would be. but if you could i'd try to replace only the spiders.

just out of curiosity, how do you weld the spiders? from what posimoto said i suppose you weld the spider and sides together, but i always figured you welded the spiders to the carrier. i've just never looked into it. can it be done bith ways?? you're just trying to keep the spiders from rotating on the side gears right?

For sure it would depend on how they were welded. Hopefully the carrier isn't ruined.

Thanks for all the input. I will have to pull the cover and look at the welds. I had it in my head that he just welded the gears themselves. Your right he could have welded the gears to the carrier. he said that the first welds broke loose and he went back in and said that it wouldn't let loose again. Now that i think about it I am alittle worried. I guess alittle investigation is in my future this weekend. Thanks again for the advice.

Just a thought.....What do you guys think the odds are of finding another D27A with 4:88 gears laying around that nobody needs That could be swapped in? Fix this one later.

Looking for a quick and easy here........

I have a carrier out of a D27 that was in a '66 with 5.38 gears. I believe it's the same as the 4.88 carrier. You would install your ring gear on it and all you would have to setup would be the backlash. I don't know if the '66 axle was a 27A or not. PM me if you're interested.

Has anyone replaced spiders before? Does the carrier need to come out? Can they be replaced while still in the axle housing. The reason I ask is that the lockright/powertrax talk how their lockers can be install without removing the carrier. However working on it on the work bench does seem alot easier (on the back).

I see you have 4.88's. On the lower gear (higher numerical) ratio carriers the ring gear is too thick, so you'll need to pull the carrier. The higher gear carriers allow an easy install right in the pumpkin. When I had 3.73 in my D27 I installed a Lock-Rite in about 30 minutes.
