I have a 1975 CJ5 with the ignition in the dash. I recently replaced my wiring harness with a Painless harness. This harness was setup for a column mounted ignition switch and had 2 connectors that I had to swap out. I noted the location / color of the original wires and replaced them with the new ones.

My question is this. There are 2 red leads that came off the Painless harness. I put them into the original connector and 1 is directly shorted to ground. Do I need to tie them together, isolate and stow 1 of them or should they both be hooked up? If they need to be hooked up, that means the other wire that is common to these plugs are grounded and should not be.

FYI, I have not attempted to start the Jeep since I replaced the wiring harness. (The starter is bad) Everything else seems to be in good working order. (Electrical wise)

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the 1975?

    Thank you,

    Gasseous

Is your harness part#10110 ? If it is and you are using ign. in dash, on back of ign BATT 2 RED, ACC BRN , ST Lt BLUE IGN RED with Yellow tracer and Black ground Hope that helps.

    Rusty,

I believe that to be the P/N of the harness. Going from memory, these colors seems to be installed. I have +12v on both red wires. When I plug them both into the connector, I have a dead short from both of the outside locations. (I hope that makes sense) The jeep is in Arkansas, and I am in Alabama. I shall attempt to get a photo of the connecter. Perhaps that will help. It sounds to me like whatever the other red wire is connected to is shorted out.

    Tim,

I am not sure if the factory wiring diagram will help either. However, I should be able to trace out the other wires and see where the problem could be.

    Thanks for your assistance.

The wires I was talking about plug in directly on the back of the ign. switch. No connector plug.

After re-reading your first post, are you trying to mate the factory harness to the Painless. If so, don't know if that will work. Painless used different color wires and numbers. Do you have the Painless instruction book? You can always give them a call. The area you are in now was the only place where I had to call them, and the turn signal. I had good tech support from them, some haven't. Keep us posted.

    Rusty,

I am mating the factory connector to the Painless harness. I contacted Painless and they told me to simply disconnect the wires from their connectors, (there were 2 of them because it was set up for an ignition switch in the column), and plug them into the factory connector. When I did that, I have a dead short on one of the +12v wires.

I shall keep this posted when I figure out the problem.
