Long story but here we go. Major leak at the front of transmission pulled it off replaced the seal and gasket on the cone put it back on and thought I knocked the clutch fork loose attempted to pop it back on. Did nothing to slow down the leak but will worry about that at a later date. What I did do is now if I put it in neutral and start it up it wants to slowly walk forward like it is in gear. If I raise it up off the ground the wheels take off like it's in 1st gear. I push in the clutch and it won't go into gear unless I slam it in and it doesn't do anything to disingage the clutch when I push in the pedal. I turn it off and it shifts through the gears like there is no problem. I've replaced AND adjusted the clutch cable for hours hoping that my problem was there. One other odd variable if I shiift the transfer case into neutral and start it up it does not try to walk off. I now have it at a clutch shop and the mechanic is wanting to pull the transmission off and go fishing. I would rather have an idea where to start hoping someone can give me some ideas.

sounds like the clutch needs adjusting from the description you give
    Jim

ps.....can you look up through the inspection hole at the clutch while someone engages the clutch to see if you have clearance?

At first I was thinking maybe the t/o bearing is not on the fork correctly but, if the trans is in neutral, there should be no power to the wheels no matter what position the clutch is in. I'm leaning toward something internal in the trans though I'm not sure how it could have happened during a seal replacement. Shift tower or shift rail problem?

I'm with you Dave at one point I think that it is the clutch but then I tell myself if it's in neutral then there should be no power to the clutch making it a non-issue. BUT if there is a problem in the transmission and the power does make it to the clutch then pushing in the clutch pedal should take it out of the equation. I'm stumped I'm worried that I have 2 different but yet related problems.

Did you replace the pilot bushing? A new/ tight pilot will cause exactly what you're describing.
